Will the Q work with the internet if I buy a mini SD wifi card? Will Verizon allow this, or will they charge me?

They shouldn't have the ability to charge you for anything that you put in your minisd slot (unless VZW found some new technology to put into the phone to do so, doubtful).

The bad news is that according to the stats posted everywhere, it seems like the minisd slot on the Q could only be used for memory.

I spoke to a verizon rep asking about this issue and he told me in what seemed to be a very carefully worded comment that "verizon wireless does not support wifi mini sd cards" then in a bit of a different tone "but if you get a card and put it in the phone it might work" so more or less it sounded to me that it does work but verizon is trying hard not to say that so they can sell more of their $40 unlimited data packages. anyone else have any info on this? maybe from a motorola rep?

I just spoke with verizon and they said you can use a wifi card and use it in wireless areas. However, if you download anything, you will be charged. Also, using the wifi card to connect to the internet uses your minutes.

How in the world would wifi use your minutes? Thats incorrect. I have a i730 that has NO service hooked up to it and has wifi, guess what I can still use the inet. WIFI and vzn's data plan has nothing to do with one another. I have also read that the Q does support wifi cards.

I agree. there is no chance verizon can touch your minutes if you are on the internet through a wifi card. also unless you are using verizon's pay as you go data (compared to their unlimited plan or a wifi card) they cannot charge you anything for downloading anything from the internet, the wifi card lets the phone go on the internet, at that point you are using a piece of hardware to access the internet completely seperate from your wireless phone plan and carrier. in this i am 99% positive i'm correct.. anyone have any hard evidence to back up with this guy is saying?

use logic, wifi is wifi. Do you have to pay to use your laptop to access your wireless router? Obviously inside your ISP.

no. I was agreeing with you. "this guy" is the guy who is saying verizon is going to cut off your index finger if you use a wifi card. i was asking if he has any solid facts on it or if it was just what a verizon rep told him. as i said before they clearly dont want us to use wifi because they want to sell their data packages. if it supports wifi it wont affect your minutes its just a matter of if verizon verizonizes the Q and disables the SDIO port so it wont accept wifi.

Whatever VZN decides to do, there will be someone who figures out how to make it right. I'm not worried about the wifi. It will work sooner or later, its only a matter of time before someone hacks it.

I'd also like to only use wifi if i choose and disable the evdo radio so I dont inadvertently use there network if i lose wifi connection.

I have no solid facts. The verizon rep told me that and so i believed him. I guess you can't trust them. Also, I believe the cheapest mini sd wifi card is 110. Is this true??

There are two wifi cards I found on amazon. However, is one of these not a mini sd card?

That's the MILLION DOLLAR question (well - actually the $40/mo question + $105 fixed cost).
I won't believe any response until I hear of someone who actually has is working wtih the Q after the 31st.
