Question about push e-mail

JetStar

May 17, 2006, 10:37 AM
I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to e-mail technology, etc., so forgive me if my question seems, uh... dumb. But here goes: how exactly can I get e-mail on the Q in real-time like on a Blackberry? Is this possible? Is this what they mean by "push e-mail"? If so, does this only work for syncing with Outlook Express on a PC? The reason I ask is because I have Mac and don't use Express for e-mail.. I'm wondering if the Q could be configured to have "instant" e-mail on its own server, or does it have to be "pushed" from a PC? Am I out of luck in this regard?

Any help would be appreciated. Thx!

Yes, that's how. But you need your email admin to be running Exchange 2003 with Service Pack 2. Then he has to configure it to work, configure your firewall, and a few other things.

If you have exchange - which I guess you don't - you could use GoodLink to do the push email.

Microsoft is an option but only if you are a small company. It is not a ready for prime time solution.

Wow. I didn't realize that. Sounds like push is out of the question or impractical for purely personal, as opposed to business/server, use.... as well as for a Mac owner. Hmmm, I don't see how people can really think of this as a "Blackberry killer" when it doesn't do the same thing.. or at least doesn't do it as easily....

Huh?? Dont know what you're talking about.

Microsoft Exchange's push email works great. I have the i730 w/WM5.0 and push from Exchange and it's just as fast and reliable as the blackberry. Dont know why you're saying that it's not ready for primetime, it's here and it's ready.

On the other hand, from all i've read about the Moto Q, it WONT have the AKU2 upgrade (which enables real push email) at launch. It will be a software upgrade further down the road.
But, exchange does have a backup pull solution which sends a silent SMS to the device telling it to sync when a new item arrives.

As for Mac... sorry, dont know.

This phone should also come with wireless sync which has a way to sync up with a pop3 account the same exact way blackberry's webclient program works. You won't have to keep your computer on in order to receive your email you'll just get copies sent to the handset.

Yeah, push exchange is great. 🙄

Let's see how MS Exchange push matches up:
It has limited/no fleet management, doesn't sync everything, is a data hog (slow), can be difficult to install, requires inbound firewall port, limited security, has no support, needs third party solutions to complete the wireless needs of an enterprise. I can go on if you would like.

1. Sync's everything: Inbox, Calender, Contacts and Tasks all sync over the air. I dont think anyone's asking for more than that.

2. No 3rd party solutions needed here. The server uses Microsoft Activesync (built into Exchange 2003)to sync directly with my device.

3. Difficult to install? There is no installation!! Exchange 2003 has everything already configured! All u need is a device.

4. Re security
Dont know much about it. But we use SSL bet the server and the device.

So, not so sure if you're talking about the thing that we currently use at our company, cause what we're using is super simple and works great.

It's simple alright. Simple and limited. But if your company doesn't require security and doesn't plan on supporting alot of devices it's a cheap solution.

Sorry Flooty, I have to agree with Turtle... but just on one point - it isn't ready for primetime.

We've got it running here, but I have no way at all of knowing who has a device set up for direct push without searching every damn user in my environment. THAT makes it not ready for prime time. That's my biggest beef. I work at a very technologically progressive company and we won't even think to roll it out because of the lack of management features.

Plus the security features offered right now are basic at best.

BUT, that's the only point I agree with Turtle on. The rest, I'm in line with you. It works, was a snap to install, and if you put ISA in the middle there is no security problem whatsoever. Throw in SSL and you're s...

Thanks for clearly explaining out what Turtles concerns were.
I am not on the IT side of it so I wouldnt know of those problems. But I can definately see where you're coming from and it does sound pretty dumb that there isnt a status screen showing the users that are using push, if it's working for each user, etc.

Leave it to Microsoft to always leave something out until the next "SP".

are you using for personal or corporate?

corporate you need IT support

otherwise VZW offers wireless sync that offers internet redirector for up to 4 accounts or you can do the desktop redirector and leave your comp on all the time and have email and pim updates sent to you

have fun with it...it should be good...esp with the bluetooth stereo headphones

just as a fyi...the Q will be more ofa smartphone/media device than a pds like the treo 700w or xv6700
(primary example...powerpoint, excel and word you can view on the Q...but can't change like the treo 700)

if you just want email, nice camera, windows, media player and the first vzw phone to be able to use BT stereo headphones...Q will be awesome

Nobody asked so I will. What email service provider do you have? and can you create a forwarding rule from it? If so then get a blackberry device definetly and forward the email to your userID@vzw.blackberry.net and it will be in real time. No exchange or 3rd party required.

I have read all of the posts and the answer is not clear. I currently have a Blackberry 7750 and use the blackberry web client to push my pop3 email account. Can you get true "push email" with the Q for a pop3 account or do you always need to have a computer on somewhere? On a separte note, does anyone know if the Q can be tethered as a modem like the Blackberry 7130e?
