well duh. but the year after that, when our 2-year cingular contracts expire (lets face it, we're waiting till this phone comes out), then we'll go to sprint where they have EV-DO which is fastest overall.

I'm not going anywhere lol. Sprint maybe faster, but that's okay. I've found something good (Cingular) and I'm sticking with it 😁

And no, I am not trying to say Sprint is bad because I've had no personal experience with it. I only know one person that's had Sprint and his service seemed to be just fine.

to be realistic, i'm a whore to service. i started with sprint because of the ads and i liked the looks of the phones on the site.

i am disapointed to not see 7pm nights and weekends on cingular, but the phone baby, it is all about the phone, and cingular has it this time. whoever gives me the best services (usually data wise, cause i wanna hook this up to my laptop for internet) and the best phones has won me over.

Well, you can always haved the 7pm Nights for $7, but I agree, they should sort of follow in the same path as other carriers and give us the 7 pm Nights. Or even nicer would be like T Mobile does, weekends start on Fridays 😁

I too am looking for good service, and so far I have not one complaint about T Mobile, except the customer service but that's fine, it doesn't effect the reception on my phone. Also, high(er) data speeds because I use my phone to connect to the internet on my PowerBook at work and other places. Although the GPRS isnt too bad considering it could be alot worse, I'd still like something faster, I hope the s710a and it's EDGE does it for me, I'm sure it will.

Do you have any experience with EDGE at all, as in hav...

haha.

i dont know anyone who has used EDGE before, unfortunately. are you just getting unlimited mediaWorks and sharing it to your lappy? are you currently bluetoothing or usb cabling it over?
...

Jan 1, 2005, 11:39 PM
Yeah, I have the MediaWorks package and I connect to the net on my computer through Bluetooth, using a Sony Ericsson T637.

wait im confised i though EV-DO was 2.4 ghz while EDGE was 2.5 ghz or is that just verizon...ionno maybe sprints is faster but utms will be 3 ghz(3G) so will sprint boost to 3.5 ghz by upgrading evdo or will sprint even go higher?
...

Jan 2, 2005, 1:44 AM
it isnt ghz or anything like that.

EVDO is a 3G technology, as in third generation, same with UMTS.

EVDO has a peak of 2.4 megabits, UMTS way slower (peak). in reality they preform fairly similar, nothing to loose sleep over. EDGE is a "2.5G" technology, as in GPRS is 2G, UMTS is 3G, EDGE is kinda in the middle, bridging the gap.

verizon and sprint both do EVDO in select markets now, but expansion is always happening. after EVDO is EVDV which is data and voice, while EVDO is just data.

For the most part speeds are comparable to dial up although every now and then it may speed up a little past the boundries of dial up, not by alot though.

I have to admit though, for me at least, the connection has not been to stable when I'm at work. I always get disconnected with an error message saying, "You have been unexpectedly disconnected because the other side is not responding". This only happens at work. I still dont understand why though, I'll have full bars for my signal strength and GPRS strength, yet it still happens. I can deal with it though, the only way it'd bother me is if I was downloading something. But im surely not going to be downloading anything at these speeds, nor would I attempt to. I havent got that sor...

lol, i've been on 4megabit broadband for so long, i forget what 5-8k/sec downloads are like.

but EDGE isnt too much faster, 15-25 kbytes per second probably. im curious to find out. 😁

I hear ya, I have a broadband connection at home, I don't know exactly how fast it is but it's fast, fast enough for me not to complain about it being slow. So when I'm using this it's like, "Come ON!! Is this thing broken?! JEEZUS!!" lol. Although I still must say, it's better than nothing at all.

Everywhere I read though about it, it says EDGE is 177 kbps? I suppose everyone's got their own numbers about it. I'm still anxious to get it and try it out for myself. So hopefully Cingular decides to do something productive, like release the s710a, SOON. 😁

EDGE hovers right around 177, the theoretical max i believe is 300-something. i'm considering going down to the cingular store and bluetoothing up with the z500 to test its EDGE.
the s710a will hit warehouses on the 14th, stores after that.

I forgot to mention... unfortunately Sony Ericsson decided to be stingy with the z500. The z500 does not support Bluetooth at all. Which the z500 looked very appealing to me, I love clamshells overall, but once I found out that it did not support Bluetooth I sorta said to myself, "Well f*ck that.." So no I am waiting very impatiently for the s710a 😁

Do you have to download and use the Cingular Connection Manager? I called tech support and they told me I had to use that, but I connect to my laptop using bluetooth, and that isn't supported..I tried making a connection using windwos, and it works fine using the dial up number of my ISP but when I put in *99# or the *99***3# like you use, it will not connect...

Do you have the correct password and username?

The username should be (in capitals): WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM

And the Password: CINGULAR1

If you have all that then I really don't know what the problem could be except possibly Windows. I hear alot of complaints about people having problems with Windows and Bluetooth, something to do with the drivers and what not. There's alot of talk about the drivers and such on the Motorola forums under certain phones, I'll look fot it all and let you know.

Im not sure how Windows works, but in order to get my net to work on my Mac I needed to download modem scripts which Sony Ericsson provided me the web page where I can do so, they were very helpful and it had me up and running in no time. I'd say give SE customer service a call, perhaps they could help you out too. It's worth a shot.
