im not confident, but im pretty sure that by just having internet you'll have EDGE service. look at how the plans are set up on other cingular phones that offer EDGE, i at least dont see a special package for EDGE service.

It is the same cost by cingular. I have moto V3 that use edge service.

EDGE is not a service, rather it is an enhancement to GPRS that uses software to compress data thus increasing transfer rates. Although EDGE has not yet been implemented in all areas, there is no additional charge in those areas which have been upgraded. However, you do have to have a data plan or PDA connect plan to take advantage of EDGE. If you use MediaNet, you will not see the enhancements of EDGE, which isn't really that big of a deal since the current transfer rates are fine for WAP. If you are using your PDA or Laptop to surf HTML pages or download, you will definitely see the advantages of EDGE over GPRS.

Pardon me for posting this here but I feel it's the most appropriate:

1. Just to make sure, the S710 is EXACTLY the same as S700, but with EDGE and 850 instead of Radio and 900? When did the S700 come out?

2. This is a semi-relevant question about the SE V800 (since I can't seem to find a forum for it). Since that one is a 3G UMTS phones, does that mean it's automatically EDGE ready? I know EDGE is only a data-transfer mechanism like GPRS, but since I don't know much about 3G I thought I ask here to see if anyone knows. So if a phone is 3G enabeled is it also EDGE ready? In the SE website it only says GSM 900/1800/1900 and UMTS. I ask this because we will get EDGE soon but no full 3G yet.

The SE V800 does not have EDGE. EDGE is only in the Americas. 3G works on UMTS which is alot faster than EDGE and you won't be seeing UMTS in the Americas for some time. Cingular has released it in some cities though.

EDGE is launching soon in our country too. It's probably a matter of a few weeks. I don't know if UMTS will be available here soon though, it seems like another year at least.

I am having trouble finding the "perfect" phone! I want something with UMTS (for the future) and EDGE (for now), and having a bigger screen is a bonus.

Will the S710 come in 900/1800/1900 as well, or is it just 850/1800/1900?

for 900 you'll want the s700i, simple as that. UMTS is in about 5 markets nationwide, you wont find anything with EDGE and UMTS probably, as EDGE is 2.5G and UMTS is full 3G. I dont know for sure, but i was under the impression 3G is america only, so it wouldnt make sense for foreign phone makers to put EDGE and UMTS on phones where in their home areas they have GPRS and UMTS or its equivalent 3G data.

The reason I am hesitant towards the S700 is that it doesn't have EDGE! Since EDGE is launching soon here it would make sense for me to get an EDGE ready phone now. S700 is not. S710 is EDGE ready but only 850. What to do now? ('^_^)

if you're on Cingular, get the s710a. If you are on Tmobile, it doesnt matter, they only use the 1900 band and done use EDGE. Why wouldnt you want the 850 band, cingular uses it in the Americas...

I am sorry for not explaining it well. I live in the middle east, not America. So I wouldn't even be able to use it with a Cingular or T-Mobile plan; was thinking (& hoping) for an unlocked 900 version that I can use here. Our carriers operate on 900/1800.

3G is far from america only, we're a bit late to the game. Japan and some other Asian and Euro nations are running full 3G service. We're setting up EDGE because we can deploy 3G fast enough. The Euro and Asian countries skipped EDGE all together, and went to 3G from 2G service. I believe Japan is in study for their 3G service.

In regard to S710a and S700i, if you're not in the American market or intend to travel a lot, you should get the S700i over the s710a. The S710a has EDGE, supports 800/850 GSM band. The S700i supports radio and has 900 GSM band, which is used in almost every single nation out there. American is odd like that.. like inches and foot instead of centimeter and meter, and how we drive on right side of the road.

EDGE is a "2.5" G technology, japan went mostly to CDMA 2000 which peaks at 2.4 ghz, verizon and sprint have both started cdma 2000 in selected markets in the US. I'm not sure what europe does for their high-speed, but japan and korea lead the way with cmda 2000. I really dont know why the US went to EDGE instead of straight to UMTS, probably because of pricing and the fact that phone manufacturers werent releasing phones that really used the features over here. either way, america will be 3G by about 2006-2008. AT&T is getting UMTS and verizon/sprint will get cdma 2000. Tmobile is just getting into edge, so they'll be behind, i believe they plan to have nationwide EDGE by '08.

Korea is mostly (cdma 2000) EV-DO, Japan is mostly UMTS. There is no more AT&T, it is Cingular, which was always bigger. EDGE will be antiquated by 2008, like analog now..
