Another Bluetooth Crippled Verizon handset

The Nokia 6256i phone is presently engineered to meet Bluetooth Specification 2.0, Handsfree, Object Push, Generic Access, File Transfer, Headset and Serial Port profiles, as well as Bluetooth headset, laptop and car kit profiles. To ensure compatibility with other devices with Bluetooth technology, check with the device manufacturer. Bluetooth is a registered trademark of Bluetooth SIG, Inc.

The info disclosed on Phonescoop says version 1.1 / supports Headset, Handsfree, Object Push, Generic Access, File Transfer, and Serial Port profiles.

The problem is that Bluetooth SIG will likely strip most of those profiles away, when it gets Qualified for "VerizonTooth", since they only want the handset to have limited functionality,

You could be right russ, but allegedly callout cards for the 6256i have arrived at VZW stores that show the bluetooth NOT being crippled on the phone:

There's a thread over at howardforums if you're interested. Let's cross our fingers and hope it's true.

Let's hope, Jake. It's been Qualified like that since October, 2004. It also has BREW, DUN, Video capture and an expansion slot.

Verizon has never done that before in a handset.

No vcast/bluetooth is cripled, card slot still their/mp3 currently not on demo but supposed to be back on before launch, also curious to see if fm radio makes it on their/ the pre launch material floating around is from nokia, not verizon so the carrier has posted nothing about the bluetooth functions and trust me it will be headset and dun only. possibly only headset. Their will be no lawsuit becasue verizon has promised nothing as of yet. The phone should be between 100-150 at launch and i am sure their will be some rebate. I have been told it will be out early next month.

Our mission is to let the handsets be sold without the new restrictions.

I understand the frustration, but is it really a "Right" to have these features????? I don't think so.

It is if that was the way the phone is designed and that is what the buyer paid for. My 6255i has full functionality with CellularOne (soon to be with US Cellular in Kansas). I bought the phone for the the Bluetoothe functionality and the features of the phone.

First off, this reply isn't just about this nokia, it's about the Verizon bluetooth issue in general.

They bought the phones from Nokia (or whoever) with FULLY FUNCTIONAL BLUETOOTH they then DISABLED that feature of the phone, and installed their own proprietary "get it now" non-bluetooth solution in it's place and proceed to charge their customers a monthly fee if they want that "service" that is NOT NEEDED on the phone if the original manufacturer supplied functionality of the phone hadn't been disabled.

Is it their perogative to do that? Sure I would agree - is it the RIGHT THING TO DO by their customers? I think most would agree it's not. It's nickel and diming their customers just because they can by creating a service they don't ...

Want I am getting from most people who now have a 6256i is that the blue tooth is fully functional. We will have to wait a week or so to see if that is true continues to be true.

Verizon has been very much anti someone else getting money when we can. And that is what blue tooth does.

Someone getting something like a ring-tone from an Average Joe's website and VZW getting nothing for the transaction is how the markets and economics should work.

Customer should get what he wants and is willing to pay for.
