Bars = irrelevant
1x vs. 3G = irrelevant
phone works = relevant
phone does not work = relevant
If it bother's you that much seeing the 1x/ 3G toggling in the menu bar, download the ADW.launcher interface and hide the whole notification bar, like I do.
NOTE: If you're connected to a WiFi network, you will never see the 1x or the 3G no matter what you do. This is by design, not error.

I totally understand now. It makes totally makes sense. I have no complaints as long as my phone is working....
