I find it equally odd that, within a matter of days you have 2 CEO's from rival carriers saying pretty much the same thing, just days before the June 6th launch. Why in the world would anyone from Palm announce that it will be carried anywhere besides Sprint NOW? Palm needs to sell as many Pre models as possible right out of the gate. So it needs to at least pretend that Sprint is the only one getting love. That said, I do think the particular language used by both AT&T and Verizon is a bit curious. Why not just say, "We're getting the Pre?" Even still, I would be SHOCKED if Sprint is still the only carrier for the Pre a year from now. Why would Palm do that? It needs to sell as many units as possible so it makes sense to also partner up with other carriers. And when was the last time that Palm had an exclusive agreement with just one carrier? AT&T makes much more sense than Verizon due to being GSM.

Being an early adopter of such a phone, be it an iphone, g1 or Pre, one has to expect not having a big stable of applications right out of the gate, you have to give it time. Of all the bitching, the one I agree is the 8gb, but its not an unlivable to live with. As far as battery, I'm sure Seido or some similar phone outfitter will have a better battery before to long.

I have a Verizon XV-6800 (HTC Mogul) which is a smart phone and the only way the GPS works is if I load up Verizon's crappy VZ Navigator for 9.95 a month (which is the same program the dumb phones use- guess they want to be like the government and make everyone equal since the dumb phones can't load/use free 3rd party software). I tried VZ Navigator for about 20 minutes, called Verizon back and told them to remove it from my account since Live Search and Google Maps were much better programs. I had Microsoft's Live Search, Google Maps (FREE btw) and IGuidance all working fine using various hacks and GPS Gate until Verizon changed the AGPS sytem earlier this year blocking access to the tower information. I got around that by spending about 30.00 for a GPS receiver and everything works fine again and I don't have to pay bloody Verizon 9.95 a month. The funny thing is that the same Sprint phone (HTC Mogul) and AT&T model are able to use FREE software. The new Verizon smartphones such as the HTC Touch Pro, Touch Diamond and I think the Blackberry's are crippled also and locked down to Verizon's VZ Navigator since Verizon obfuscates the data from the towers. I'd have left Verizon a long time ago if the CS and Network weren't as good as they are because the equipment sucks.

I don't care how nice a CSR is on the phone or how fast they respond to a call. If I'm not getting a good deal, I will be upset anyway.

http://www.obsessable.com/news/2009/06/09/why-at-a nd-t-wont-support-mms-until-late-summer-plus-tethe ring-plan-rumours/ And for those of you who are fire-walled... Why AT&T won't support MMS until late summer, plus tethering plan rumours The Boy Genius Report digs up the reason why the iPhone 3G and 3GS won't get MMS support in the States for several months. Sources close to TBGR indicate that enabling MMS support for iPhone 3Gs at the June 17 launch of the iPhone OS 3.0 or for the iPhone 3GS at its launch June 19 would require AT&T to "manually remove all the “Opt Out MMS codes” on each account." In other words, it sounds like more of an administrative issue than a technical one that will prevent iPhone 3G users from sending and receiving MMS until the "late summer" date AT&T has promised to provide support by. That... sorta stings. Surely the carrier head some heads up this was coming, right? Maybe they didn't watch the March 17 announcement event... BGR also received word that the data tethering plan AT&T is working to put together to support, you know, one of the other major new features in iPhone OS 3.0 besides MMS they won't be supporting out of the gate, is being considered at a price point of $70 per month. Which might seem reasonable if it also included SMS and MMS and yet, it apparently would not include them. In other words, in order to send these small packets of data over a different protocol, you would have to pay AT&T an extra $20 per month on top of the $70 they think normal people might shell out just to tether their phone on an arguably craptastic 3G network. AT&T, if you're listening — please see reason. There's no reason tethering should cost $70 a month when a decent 3G card plan on a better network (cough Verizon cough) goes for $60 and gets you a nice USB adapter you can use on a range of devices, all the while still allowing you to use your phone as, well, a phone. Like, to make calls and stuff. Crazy! Would you pay $70 to tether your iPhone on top of a $20 SMS/MMS data plan?

What did you do then? You would have walked to the prison gate and asked for help, the guards are there 24/7. Or you walk a block or two away from the prison and get service. Just because your phone stops working doesn't mean your brain has to.

That's why when it comes to the wireless industy, one should never jump on the newest products. I would think that you more than most in this forum, would know that this industry has the lowest amount of trained personnel in new devices and products. Iphone, G1, BB Storm, Pre. All were met with initial knowledge deficiency. Many CS reps in the industry; no matter what carrier, still don't know how to use a windows device to full potential. This would anger me more than a brand new device out of the gate.

Actually multiple networks with two imcompatible technologies would be a complete nightmare for any company. Not doing something like that is actually a testament to their decision makers. They have always had a small network compared to the Big 2 so I think they are moving along quite well. They are moving to 3G just as very data centric uses are becoming mainstream. They might were not the first out of the gate but they arrived at a very good time.

I have both an iPhone and Rogers branded HTC Magic, I live in NJ, and have very little problems with service with both, and both are using AT&T's 3g. And as an owner of both, I can say they are both fine phones. As a matter of fact, the Rogers Magic has more memory then what the MyTouch offers. And I understand they are essentially the same phones, just motherboard differences. 32a vs. 32b. As far as what you said about VZW, I agree, if was to do CDMA, I think I'd go with Sprint, with all their flaws. BTW, no carrier is perfect. We have TMO 3g here and I had a G1 (which I unlocked and my daughter uses on edge) I didn't see any outstanding nor did it provide bad performance. With my corp discount the cost is about the same and maybe a little less with them then TMO. The odd thing I rarely MMS anyone, but I do agree this feature should have been available out of the gate. I also think, if the iPhone was offered to any carrier, as it should, 80% of the bitching would be gone.

I blame apple for this. ITs all part of their master plan. Just think about it. They opened the flood gate for people to switch over to get the iphone on at&t. People love everything about the iphone but at&t(for the most part). So now there are 9 million people who have the iphone on at&t and many of them have stated they want to switch to another provider if given the chance. But what will happen when they do? They will buy another iPhone even though there is nothing wrong with their current one. So now by apple building a superior device with a sub-par radio in it will be able to sell twice the amount of handsets. Their genius never suprises me. Its just amazing. Hopefully the FCC will eliminate the silly exclusivity agreements....oh ya, and allow agents to sell the iphone.

Great reading :-)... "When the BlackBerry Storm hit the market, owners were staying up all hours of the night waiting in hopes of a firmware update to leak in the forums, with the aim of improving the usability of the device. With the BlackBerry Storm2, this won't be necessary. Out of the gate the version 5 software runs very fast and smooth, quick screen orientation changes included. I'm sure CrackBerry readers who are Storm2 owners will still be online 24/7 looking for the latest firmware, but in the case of the Storm2 it won't be nearly as necessary."

For those of us who have friends or relatives reluctant to upgrade from their comfortable, ancient brick of a phone, the Sanyo SCP-3810 might be the phone to do it. My siblings and I, as well as Mum's contemporaries who have been quicker than she to adopt new cellphone technology, have encouraged her for a long, long time to ditch her seven-year-old phone to acquire one with more capabilities. Humble and basic it may be, but the Sanyo SCP-3810 finally persuaded our Mum that having a phone with camera, Bluetooth, and text messaging/email capabilities was NOT just the realm of the young, restless, and tech-y. The keypad is comfortably large, with well-seated, distinct, backlit buttons, the camera is as good or better (and certainly handier) than her "stand still while Granmere takes your picture" camera, the screen is clear and large, and the user manual is comprehensive and comprehensible. It didn't hurt, either, that the phone came in red -- her fav colour -- and the clamshell/flip seems to be sturdy. The Sanyo SCP-3810 may not be a racehorse of a cellie, but for hesitant folks stuck in the starting gate of the Telecom Tech race, this will shift them. Bravo, Sanyo! :D

Once again, you are speculating on other individuals experiences without trying it yourself. It is appearent that you are a follower of bad rather than a leader of good. The high reviews greatly overshadow the complaints. Quit trying to diffuse a new technology without the proper merit. You obviously are an LTE advocate. What makes you think LTE will not have issues out of the gate? Jayshmay is proof of high regards toward WiMax/Clear.

crackberry, I don't think that is totally true, I buy unlocked nokia phones, last decent one was the e71, otherwise stuff like then N97 and 5800 are disappointments with the former being an expensive disappointment. The N900 has potential, if not in, following maemo devices. But one expensive phone isn't going to make it. And especially with a flood of decent quality cheaper and more accepted and developed Android phones. Many Nokia people went on and one about no MMS on the iPhone for years, and I agree it should have had it out the gate. Whats the excuse Nokia has for the N900 which doesn't have it, nor will it work in the portrait mode. Sure it can change, and probably will, but it maybe too late. And I hope they do pull through. Just seems to me, that Nokia is wandering around and needs to focus. I've been to their NYC store, nice store, get to mess with live phones, employees where helpful etc... If it closes, to save money and improve, fine by me, but still I will miss it.

Oh yes! There was a thread here entitled "Consumer" where the poster was trying to figure out how to go from a Tour to a Droid. That's the last one which sticks out in my mind but there are many. Work in Tech Support whenever a new advanced device is released and watch the liars call in with bull**** about their phone has never worked (but they NEVER called in until this new phone dropped) and why can't I just get a new phone for free with no contract extension, blah, blah, blah. Yeah...one would get a bit jaded. When the Essex or Tour2 is released there is going to be a flood gate of callers trying to get swapped to it from the Tour for nothing and with no contract extension. Just watch... And then there are the ones who call in after getting some tips in forums like this one where they have been told that they are ENTITLED to a different model phone by someone here and yeah I get a little flashback going and I DO feel a need to set the record straight. You might find a store manager who will do it... I just don't want you to walk in there swaggering like it is a done deal and get your feelings hurt. When I worked in retail I always knew which manager to take those customers to.

I thought HSPA capped out at 42mbps, but appearently not. I wonder what the real world end user speeds are of an HSPA network that can do 84mbps. I swear we in the U.S. are getting ripped off with these loser speeds. And most of you on Phone Scoop are happy with a measly 800kbps-1.1mbps. So technically when Verizon launches LTE commercially, which they said will have speeds of 8-12mbps will STILL be slower than 3's HSPA network that is a 3G technology. http://mobile.engadget.com/2010/01/20/3-scandi navia-first-out-of-the-gate-with-84mbps-hspa/#comm ents

I bought the E71x "out the gate" and was very disappointed: it was really great hardware that AT&T had to muck-up with all kinds of stuff I never used. I purchased a lowly E63 without AT&T's modifications, swapped my SIM and I love it. With the exception of no GPS, it does everything I needed a good smartphone to do with a minimum of fuss and muss. I've just purchased a used E72 because I've found that I actually DO need the GPS after all. Bottom line is that I'm cured of EVER buying a branded phone again. Do yourself a favor and don't wait for AT&T to release their version of this hardware - buy it "unlocked".
