Problems with local service...

I had Cingular for about 5 years during and after college , at which point I was asked to find another provider because I lived outside the home area.

No big Deal, I have always had great service (4-5 bars all the time) in my home with 850 MHz so I switched over to centennial and never had a problem with service there either, except customer service, but that is a completely different story.

So my centennial contract is back up for renewal and AT&T is buying them out so I figure I'm gonna get changed over to AT&T with the buyout and they have been in my area for a little over a year.

I get the iPhone and my wife got the SE W760a. Service in our home has been nothing but poor since we got our new phones almost two weeks ago. ...

Sounds like phone issues to me. I mean you went with a sony and an iphone both of which are horrible phones for service with AT&T. if still able to exchange i would take both back and go with totally different phones. Stick with Nokia, Samsung and Blackberry. Those have proven time and time again to be reliable on service and quality.

Hope that helps

My wife and I both have had sony ericsson phones for the last 2 and a half years and never had problems. I don't care for any of the companies that you have suggested.

Does anyone else have any suggestions other than returning the hardware that we wanted to begin with....?

I doubt its both phones. It could be where you are located. Trees, house, building, etc. can hurt your service.

Did you take them back? Usually if two different phones arn't working right, it usually is the network/tower.

no usually if it is both phones, it could possibly be a sim card issue....the sim card travels with the network and they can go bad

Swap them in for 2G phones. I don't use 3G on AT&T because it is not yet reliable. AT&T's 2G network is solid though, and that's all I care about.

Either switch your phone to edge (turn off 3g), deal with it untill AT&T releases their femotocell for your home. Or wait for AT&T to finish upgrading the towers around you. My phones were doing this two for like three months(had full service for years, then a max of 2 bars or searching for signal) AT&T kept telling me they were working on towers in my area... Then one day it was just back to normal

After using the Field Test on the iPhone, I've found that within my home I have full signal on a tower that is 850 MHz and for some reason it wants to connect back to a 1900 MHz tower that I get little to no signal at all. When connected to either tower, the Carrier name says AT&T.

Any advice?

Can you update your roaming capabilities with ATT phones? If so, try doing that. Also, try shutting off 3g on your phone. If I remember correctly, most ATT 3g goes off the 1900 spectrum, so by telling it to not look for that spectrum, it should switch to the 850 MHz tower.

I would contact ATT with the problem though. Phones should connect to the tower with the best signal strength in the area.

I have had a case open with business technical support since the 25th and was told I would get a call back by today but have not heard anything.

Unfortunately there is no way to tell it to prioritize towers without unlocking the phone from AT&T. I do have 3g turned off but that doesn't seem to make a difference.

At this point I am stuck between paying for a phone that doesn't work at my home or switching back to a company that I despise.

Centennials Customer Service...

Other people may have had great service from them, but I was bate and switched from out of the gate by their "Blue Shirt Advisors".

Only my personal opinion.

i never heard of them, i guess there a carrier there. we have AT&T, verizon, and T-mobile and sprint here.. AT&T works really good here, strong 3G, T-mobile is good too. Verizon and sprint are good, but my friends who have verizon say they get delayed voicmail and outages, but there good. sprint is ok.. CS sucks! haha

Centennial is a regional GSM provider in the great lakes states and Puerto Rico and some other southern states. AT&T proposed a purchase of them in November of last year and they are waiting on the FCC to finalize the transaction.

Write down the IMEI for your phones and call customer care to make sure AT&T entered them correctly. (Get a magnifying glass to get the IMEI for the iPhone. It's on the edge of the SIM cradle.) I can't say I understand completely, but apparently the IMEI is very important for how the network manages your phone.

I'm having the exact same problem. We have an iphone and a Magnet.

Full signal or 1 bar on my iphone. Seems to "go to sleep" on the network when not being used, then "wakes up" when I starting using AIM.

Yeah, I'm still having the problem. I keep getting told different tales of "How the towers are pending integration", or "The local found an issue and fixed it", or "the service in your area is only Marginal at best", well if it is only marginal then why isn't AT&T doing something about it to make it better? This is your home area...

I've had the IRDB update performed, checked the IMEI on the account for both of our phones, 90% of the airtime that I have spent on my phone in the past two months has been with Business center support. I'm at my wits end.

The topic that no CSR wants to reply to me when I ask them about it is about hte centennial towers. When the merger is complete, are these towers going to be switched over to AT&T li...
