bye TDMA Hi GSM

I was told by a cingular sales rep that AT&T would have to convert all of its customers from TDMA to GSM beginning Oct. Is this true??? Would I get a great deal on a GSM??? Yeah - I am still using the old school....

Megapixel / video phone anytime soon?

There are many carriers that already have released a megapixel phone with video capability, so someone has to wonder when we will get a great phone? Maybe it would be when AT&T becomes Cingular, if that occurance isn't very far from now.

Can anyone provide more info on when we might see a "higher-end" phone and which model it might be?

purposely limiting TDMA network signal strength?

Conspiracy Theory #938...

Could ATTWS be purposely limiting the signal strength of their TDMA network to steer existing customers toward GSM accounts?

It's probably just my OCD kicking in, but I've noticed that my signal strength is for absolute crap the past few weeks. I've got a Nokia 8260, and I get zero-to-maybe-one-bar in populated, suburban areas (i.e. my home, inside or outside, and on the drive to work).

I realize that the 8260 has the internal antenna, which has a direct effect on signal strength, but it just seems odd that this perceived signal strength decrease comes at the same time that I see ATTWS' tv ads for "how many bars do you have?" touting their great GSM service.

So I did a little experiment where I compared...

Seeking Advice on choosing a carrier for Metro NY

I'm looking to sign up with a carrier. I live and work in the New York City metropolitan area. 99% of calls will be made in and around the 5 boroughs of NYC, Long Island, Westchester and New Jersey. I'm currently with ATT; my wife is now with Verizon. We intend to go with a family plan. We don't need the best phones, but want good quality. My wife wants a camera phone.

Which carrier should we go with? We went to dealers today at ATT, Verizon and Cingular. Cingular seems to have the best deal, and Verizon seems to have the worst deal. For $70/month: 850 anytime rollover minutes on a nationwide basis; unlimited free mobile to mobile (I assume this includes both Cingular and ATT, once the merger goes through); Unlimited nights after...

Online activations and credit checks?

I'm an indirect exclusive AT&T Dealer and heard that AT&T has online credit checks and activations. Our Rep told us about this at one time but it got delayed. Any news on if it is ever gonna happen or does it already exist?

Merger possibly complete in October?

I was told when I called Cingular that the planned merger was likely to be well on it's way to completion and that they expect the takeover to be done sometime in October. That seems to be very soon...so it's a great sign that we AT&T customers will soon get a much better seletion of phones for GSM.

It looks like several mid to high end models are on their way, possibly being released as soon as late September or in October...just in time for the merger.

Some big questions will be how services now with AT&T will evolve into Cingular. Things like mmode (internet access), calling plans, new phones, and customer service just to name a few immediate effects.

If anyone has more news about the merger, please post.

MORE WCDMA!? Cingular is getting a great deal

AT&T Wireless just added new markets to its WCDMA. Any opinions on why they did this when they didn't have to?

Is this to make Cingular happier? I figured Cingular would be overlaying the current WCDMA areas with 800 WCDMA if that exists or will exist so I'm not sure what is going on here.

International Use

A tip for all you international travellers:

Call in to International Wireless Care before you leave to make sure your account is ready for use. Also, if you are going to be calling other countries while roaming, advised the representative, as there may be some restrictions. Also, remember that AWS phones are SIM locked. Finally, the voicemail access steps are different then when you are in the USA. Here they are:

1. Press and hold 1,
2. Enter your 10 digit number, DO NOT PRESS * AFTERWORDS,
3. Wait until you hear your greeting then press *,
4. Enter passcode.

Enjoy your travels.

AT&T service in Philly?

I'm looking to get out of my contract with TMobile due to numerous dropped calls, crappy upgrade policies, and a few other issues. Does anyone know how Cingular/AT&T service compares to TMobile in the Philly area?

AT&T Phone Recommendation

I have a Samsung X426 now, and I like the phones size & features. However, I seem to be randomly dropping calls in areas where coverage should not be an issue. I also keep getting "Network Key" errors. So I'm looking for a better phone.

I'm looking for small or flip, color, GSM. I don't use any of the advanced features like calendar, organizer, etc. I have zero need for a camera.

GSM in Vermont/New Hampshire/Maine?

Wondering what luck other people have had with GSM in VT/NH/ME? I migrated to GSM on AT&T on Tuesday and the service is about the same as TDMA here in Metro Boston. However, I was up in VT for a Bachelor party this weekend and I lost signal shortly after getting on I-89 North (just above Concord/Bow, NH). I didn't see any signal again until getting to Rutland, VT a solid 60+ minutes further north!! Once outside of the Rutland area, I once again had ZERO service. I figured it wasn't going to be quite as good as CDMA/Analog up there, but not THAT bad, especially since they said they've expanded GSM coverage up in New England.
