Re: Thanks for a VALUABLE review ... won't buy iPhone

The lack of changable ringtones struck me as odd, too... doesn't seem like a difficult thing for Apple to implement, especially compared to the other features found on this phone. While it doesn't sound like the iPhone has everything you want right now, don't forget Apple has hinted bigtime that this feature is coming soon as a software update to the phone. My guess is that it is going to be a great feature (better than what you have ...

Great review. I bought an iPhone on Friday, half figuring that I'd end up returning it, but I've really enjoyed it so far. You mentioned having trouble accessing Wi-Fi hotspots that weren't Apple... well, I've figured it out, but it seems to be the quirkiest aspect of using this phone. FIRST, go to Settings... Wi-Fi. Look at the name of the secured network you want to join, but don't click on it! Now, click "Other" at the bottom of the list ...

Two thumbs up

They have excellent voice/call quality and are generally pretty cheap from what I have seen. My first cell was a Virgin Mobile Audiovox and it is still probably the best as far as sound quality goes. The ugly user interface and somewhat ugly design were a downer, though - and continue to be with UTStarcom stuff.

Re: is there a case or a holster for the a800??

in the Samsung SPH-A800 / MM-A800 forum

I had a really hard time finding a case that would fit my phone. I went to Radio Shack, the Sprint Store, WalMart, Target... even the Cingular store with no luck. All of them had cases it would fit in if you forced it, but I was worried that the case would damage the top buttons or something like that. Finally I checked Super K-Mart today (didn't know they were even still in business) and they had THREE cases in ...

I think when the reviewers mentioned earpiece they meant the little speaker at the top of the phone, not any sort of headphone set... didn't want you to think you didn't get everything you were supposed to in the box :-)

I think the software is actually working over USB... if I select the COMM port that links to my USB port the software sees the phone but just says it is not compatible. Too bad.

Re: SIM Cards...?

Interesting... I'd heard of R-UIM, but didn't realize it did the same thing as SIM cards (as far as transferring phonebook, voicemail info, etc.)... Can an R-UIM phone be imported to the US and be used on a carrier here like Verizon that allows non-Verizon labelled phones on their network?

SIM Cards...?

With all the MEID stuff coming into play, it seems like a REALLY GOOD TIME for US CDMA providers to get some sort of removable chip like the SIM cards on GSM phones. The only thing that lures me to GSM is the ability to change phones easily and transfer my settings without having to call customer service every time. Something tells me that those of us enjoying CDMA won't get anything equivalent to SIM cards, though... *sigh*

Re: Antenna location?

I wasn't asking if Samsung could make an internal antenna, but as this design is much thinner than the other phones you mention I was wondering WHERE they put the antenna. Obviously it is inside the phone... does anyone have an idea about where it might be located inside? I liked that the RAZR put the antenna where many people do not hold their phones (on the bottom) and where the antenna would be furthest away from the brain.

Well said! The internet could do with a little more common kindness. If someone asked what something looked like in person no one would chastise them for "being lazy"...

Antenna location?

Wonder where Samsung stuck the internal antenna? Supposedly the bulge under the flip on the RAZR is for the antenna... looks to me like the antenna might be in the top half of the flip, but that would seem rediculous...

Haha! I love it when people brag about Verizon being the best and everyone else being soooo subpar. The four states I travel most have terrible Verizon coverage (my work phone) meaning half the features don't work when I'm travelling. My personal cell phone (on Sprint) works much better for the four-state area I travel. Verizon has better ADVERTISING than Sprint, but that's pretty much all. Verizon has a lot of coverage, but a lot of it is roaming and ...

I think most people would WANT external caller ID, but carriers want cheap phones to give away with service. It's funny what people will compromise just so they don't have to ante up $19 for a phone with what they want on it. This will probably be a hot seller. I went from a flip with caller ID on the external screen to a phone without external display and can honestly say I haven't missed the caller ID much. ...

What are you guys griping about? This sounds like a smart, customer-centered decision for once. Pretend you need a wireless card NOW - and all they have is the normal 1xRTT. So you buy it (there goes a chunk of cash) and in six months a much faster service is out. You'd be torn between having to buy a new card then to replace your old, now outdated card that you only bought six months earlier OR just finish off ...

Perhaps you're just being stereotypical - who says it really is for mom and dad? The male and female buttons could be programmed to dial the persons girlfriend *and* boyfriend, if they are so inclined!

The name is definitely a mouthful. Hopefully they can come up with something better... both are strong brand names, so I doubt they'll just drop one company name altogether like Cingular did with AT&T Wireless.

What is it with Siemens?

I hear people complain all the time about the worn out, boring look on the Nokia line of phones but Siemens seems just as guilty. I can't think of the last time someone called in asking about a Siemens phone, and by the looks of this thing I guess demand will stay about the same for a while...

I like the way it looks. To each his own, but I'll be interested if it comes to some major US networks. Very art deco, refined look to it... then again, seeing it in person might change my opinion.
