I understand this concept from the standpoint of increasing a marketplace and the advantages that drives. More users means better buying power which reduces costs. Also, the combined spectrum would be immense between the two entities. However, that's where the issues begin,IMO. First and foremost, while there is a cost savings in purchasing power, there is a huge cost period in supporting so many varied networks. GSM, EDGE, HSPA, CDMA2000, EVDO Rev. A, WiMax, iDen (thought ...

Evrodude, you have to understand people for this to make sense. Most of us here know about the advantages of other devices. I am not going to spend time here bashing the iPhone, let's be honest, the iPhone changed the game and became iconic (Hey Mr Jobs, here is one for you... patent the word iCon). But, in terms of power, price, capability, and competitive progress, it is far from being the Top Dog as far ...

... smartphones with unlimited data via data cards? Verizon, for example, has soft caps on their data card plans. They haven't called them unlimited in a while though. However, their smartphone data plan is completely unlimited with no throttling. This may change, though, with the iPhone launch.

Possibly. But would you rather have had to switch to Verizon or AT&T in two years when Sprint goes into Chapter 11 because the Nextel papers come due? I don't like Sprint, personally. However, I like having them in the conversation because it keeps the Big Two at least somewhat restrained.

Menno, I am not defending Sprint by any means. This change was necessary, and we all know it. That's the only "defense" really. Necessity. They have to raise rates or fall into the slippery slope of going into Chapter 11. Don't forget, all those debt papers issued when they took over Nextel are coming due in two years. Even with this change, they are still a budget minded provider. They are still cheaper that Verizon ...

Honestly? Because price is the main thing Sprint has right now. Look at their advertisements. They talk about their simply everything plans. AT&T and Verizon 69.99 = Unlimited Talk Sprint 69.99= Unlimited Text Unlimited Email and Internet Unlimited Mobile to Any Mobile 450 Anytime minutes (I always found this to be a bit ironic. Simply Everything isn't simply everything... but still, a good deal for most) They have a cross branded commercial with HTC for their Evo phones. That's it. This is much ...

Nah... Verizon has paid out the *&% for the iPhone. Apple is a greedy company, but they aren't blind-greedy. Launching n iPhone on all the major carriers turn their exclusive feeling device, the ICON of wireless, into just another smartphone offering. They want the status that being an Apple product brings. No matter how one feels about the device, Apple, cost, and other offerings out there, the iPhone does dictate to the market while all ...

Everyone, relax. This isn't ending the world. This was a necessity, plain and simple. The thing is, Sprint has been in the red for some time now. Some will argue that this has been a "on paper only" discussion, but, regardless, the effects are present. Their only options were to find a way to raise arpu or a way to decrease costs. Being CDMA without the clout backing of Verizon's 93 million customer base makes ...

No Slammer, you took my comment backwards. :) The Regional Carriers are being asked to pay an additional 8% more if they do not offer a reverse roaming agreement over those companies, such as US Cellular, who do offer a roaming trade. Honestly, whether in a full monopoly or a completely open utopia, do you think that any carrier would discount their services to someone who is not giving something in return? When you are speaking ...

Slammer, I would heartily back your point if the fiscal requirement by Verizon and AT&T were sufficiently choking enough that it would be unfairly burdensome. However, the "premium" that they are asking for non-roaming trade agreements is in the neighborhood of 8% over those with a roaming trade agreement. This is hardly insidious at all, merely an attempt to recoup some of the costs they will incur while supporting a larger network load.

What isn't being said here is the Major Carrier side of things. We all like to assume (albeit usually correctly) that the Big Four are at fault. However, what isn't being said in this instance is that the Rural Carriers are asking for roaming agreements with price per packet/minute at the same rate as those who are giving like territory to trade on. In other words, they want the same rights without paying the differential cost. ...

As of right now, T-Mobile has a compelling product. This, in my opinion, is a very good thing. T-Mobile has been advertising it's pricing... and when you do that, you don't have a product to sell. While this isn't a game changer, it is definitely a game initiator. Hopefully, this will push Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, and regional carriers to roll-out their high-speed products faster, which helps all customers. Now, I want to add a few things ...

... a few quick tidbits. The first is in regards to technology. When the various carriers were making the various decisions over which 4G technologies would reign supreme (Ok, I just watched the Iron Chef, sue me :P), there were three really. LTE, WiMax, and UMB. Verizon and Sprint both, initially, considered going with UMB. It is more spectral efficient, faster, and has a slightly larger scalability than LTE. However, it was designed by the netwrok system ...
