They should also ban deaf people from walking on the streets

Because if you're going to ban a cell phone or MP3 player because it causes the user to not hear what's around them, you need to protect the deaf, who have a more legitimate need for protection. Keep deaf people off the streets, as well as those who can't hear because of their MP3 player or cell phone.

And while we're at it, ban people who stop in front of other people walking. What dolts.
We should all have government issued safety bubbles. It should be a crime to step outside your house if you are not inside your bubble. Also, the governments should manufacture and deliver all our food and only allow us what is most healthy for our bo...
I'm pretty sure deaf people who are crossing a street are looking around to make sure it's safe, NOT looking down at what's in their hands!

I am tempted to ask you to grow up, but I'm trying to be nice. ;)

I've solved the whole problem!

Propose a law that would require politicians to take aptitude and IQ tests before they are allowed to run for office.
Good one!
The best solution would be to only allow the terminally ill to run for public office. That way they can't screw us up for very long, anc won't run for office a second time.

Beware the Governement "do gooder"

As another commenter said "oh my God". Another Government elected official trying to help me. Please, I don't need your help! I don't need you to intrude into my life again Mr/s. city counsel-man, Mr/s. Congressman, Mr/s. State legislature! I've had enough government meddling in my life. Now you want to tell me when and where I can listen to music?

Its seems anymore our lives are full of those elected officials who are trying to help us, but really all they do is hinder us from our ability to enjoy our freedoms and rights.

Beware the elected official who though some seemingly benevolent purpose tries to deny you your right to life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness. Beware!
Life has consequences. People who chose to walk, with their sensory organs preoccupied, oblivious to what goes on around them tend not to survive. That is totally their choice.

I would rather have a world, where people are free to act as they ple...

Ban Sexy Clothes

I may be so distracted by a women in a sexy dress that I could walk into traffic.
Or Drive into a light pole or small children.
Let me die HAPPY!!!!! 🙂

when I was in like 6th grade (which was longer ago than I care to admit), our bus driver ran straight into a light pole - in the middle of an otherwise empty parking lot.

Because one of the High School students was blowing in her ear, so she covere...

it' not the pedestrians, stupid! it' the car!

let' ban cars.
then no-one will get hurt! đŸ¤Ŗ
Sure about that?????
Horse drawn carriages were no picnic either.
Usually some dickhead would walk out stagger drunk from some saloon and get trampled.
On other occasions a pedestrian would not be careful enough to look where they were walking and ...

Darwins Theory.

At this point, MOST people should be accustomed to ALMOST everyone having a cell phone. If you are gonna put your phone call/text in front of your life, let nature figure you out.

It's laws like these that make our society a bit more dumbed down. What happened to letting people figure things out for themselves?
While I mostly agree with your statement, remember that darwin's theory is just that, a theory. Take it as a grain of salt or less. Most of his "science" is insane. Full of errors and gaps.

Before he was a scientist he was deep into the Bible. He j...

Propose this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Excellent comments and many do display a good degree of common-sense as well which is rare on this website. 😉
If the person has not enough common-sense to know that being distracted while crossing a busy street puts them at risk, then let them be at fault and not the drivers in this case.
No ban is needed.
Use all the money that major urban cities pocket and put it towards highly visible signs at the "high risk" intersections. Make it totally clear through warnings and consequences of actions that create the dangers.
Then your "pedestrian" that is caught using a device (tons of security and traffic cams record it as well....hence they cannot deny they were not using it when the accident occurred).
You play with fire, you get burn...
Is all about good 'ol fashioned American greed. That lawmaker just want to make a stupid law to get his name out there. And the folks suing for getting hurt want money, just like that woman who fell in the fountain while texting. (on YouTube)

If pe...

When iPods are outlawed, only outlaws will have iPods!

I'll give you my gun, er, cell phone when you take it from my cold, dead hands! 😕
step off that curb and we'll be able to grab it before rigor sets in!! 🙂

It's a shame...

It's a shame to see how few politicians are hanged. ☚ī¸

Politic is an ugly necessity.

Jan 26, 2011, 7:41 PM

The Problem IS...

"When people are doing things that are detrimental to their own well being, then government should step in,"

This attitude is the SCARIEST thing of all. People who think government can solve our problems. I believe government IS the problem.
The government is the problem. I work for it so I know. Our government runs like a Windows PC full of virues. Little popup windows tell you everything is ok while your privacy and control is slipping away. đŸ˜ŗ

We should NOT let our gov tell us how ...

Ban Window Displays

People window shopping could be paying attention to what's in the windows and walk into a telephone pole.

Jan 26, 2011, 10:56 PM

another knee jerk reaction...

we, as humans, have piss poor barometers for risk assesment on large systems. we have 1 incident where someone dies crossing the street while using a handheld device and some idiot politician thinks it's epidemic. do these guys do *any* kind of research on what the actual % of incidents there are due to handhelds? no, "if it saves ONE life it's worth it!" bullcrap. with that philosophy, we should all be federally mandated to live in giant plastic hamster balls and never leave the house.
This kind of fear mongering has been around forever.

Railroad protestors (mainly Stagecoach Lines) tried to argue that travelling over 30mph was inherently dangerous.

Heck, the Electric Chair was invented because Edison was trying to convince pe...

Thank You Chicago!

for not coming up with this asinine law that some bored politician in new york did.fact #312- in chicago they dont have time for that non-sense because they're too busy throwing people in jail from pot smoking teenagers to old folks with alzheimers. as well as taxing the poor, middle class and small business owners to death. support your local politicians folks! 😈 đŸ¤Ŗ 😁

Jan 26, 2011, 4:43 PM

Ohgood lord...

Based on that logic, we should fine fat people when they eat a cheeseburger.

Serioysly, we cannot legislate common sense and personal responsibility. UGH!
Exactly. Worst excuse ever. It rank up there with, "I was raised to believe/do/behave/etc in X fashion, so I do."

He better not win.
ScribeD for PRESIDENT!!!!

What a waste of resources. When will we find legislators who, themselves, have COMMON SENSE.

This idiot should be laughed out of office! Wait...his next proposed law makes it illegal to talk while walking!! How many ...
Legislating personal responsibility is never a good idea.
haha, agreed!

What a silly rule. Arn't there more important things to worry about in NYC than walking aross the street on your cellphone or listening to you ipod?

Jan 26, 2011, 8:21 PM

In cars versus walking.

I think this is a ploy to bring attention to the no cell while driving law. You could argue that since one is dangerous the other is just as dangerous. Or conversely if one is stupid the other is stupid.

The problem is, if you're driving and wreck you could take not only your own life but other's around you. If you're walking and you're too busy to pay attention to the 2000lb+ vehicle headed your way. That's your own fault.

Jan 26, 2011, 4:07 PM

Better idea

Why not propose to build sidewalks above streets?? that way all cars would be under and no fatalities will occur.
Well now that I can get fined ill make sure to put down my device before walking into traffic. 🙄
What if someone is listening so intently that they walk off the edge, land in front of a car and get killed???

Lets not legislate personal responsibility and/or COMMON SENSE!!!!

If someone is stupid enough to walk out in front of me....they bett...

Jan 26, 2011, 7:02 PM

he has been trying to get this law passed since 2008.

wont happen. And if it will he will get bombarded by his constituence and it will soon be voided.
he still in office??
when is his term end?

Jan 26, 2011, 6:39 PM

And they should ban people from the city that don't look before crossing the street.

Sucka please! NYC=sheethole.

Jan 26, 2011, 6:38 PM

arsenic and Darwin

I guess we should also have a new law, a new fine if we ingest arsenic. $100 if you are caught eating rat poison or buy poison with the intent to ingest...

Isn't being killed by a truck enough of a fine?

You can't protect people from Darwin, nor should we...otherwise you end up with a society like in the movie Walle -- humans are overweight blimpoids that do nothing but eating and enjoy and are totally protect from themselves but also have zero drive to do anything productive.

Knee Jerk reaction

This seems like a knee jerk reaction the the video of the lady walking into the fountain at the mall and it being posted on YouTube and her description of how embarassing it is for her now.
Please, you cannot regulate stupid.
