I Called This
When T-Mobile experienced this same issue, all the trolls came out to bash. But I told everyone then to just wait: it's coming to your wireless provider, too. And it'll be just as big and just as bad.
They Were Likely Hacked
Despite AT&T's claims to the contrary, the outage was most likely a hacker. And despite T-Mobile's issues with hackers and data breaches, they at least own them rather than covering them up.
Time's Up for Beeper
It was a great idea that has been struck down. Most people aren't going to bother doing this.
Re: Is This for Any Smartphone/Service?
Thanks!
Is This for Any Smartphone/Service?
Or is it for AT&T customers only?
This Has Been a Long Time Coming
Many people think that cell phones communicate via satellite, but mostly they don't. Other than GPS, which still relies on cell towers for triangulation and map downloads, most cellular communications have been via land-based towers, which in turn are connected via underground cables. The obvious limitations within the current system are the terrain and gaps between towers. Satellites provide coverage over oceans and atop mountains.
We've all forgotten the main reason that we wanted mobile devices: to be able ...
Quality Versus Quantity
Over the years, the major nationwide wireless providers have boasted that they have the "largest" network of some sort, whether it be voice, data, or both. However, network reliability and call quality are far more important these days rather than coverage. Most people rely solely upon their mobile phones for communication, so it must be a solid replacement for a landline. So, the true test of any network is how well it performs where it will be used most.
"The Good Old Days"
Does anyone really yearn for "the good old days" when we had dozens of wireless companies offering expensive plans that contained limited minutes of calling and no features or perks?
I don't fly, but for those who do, this is a great perk. Congratulations T-Mobile for doing this. Now, the other guys will have to do likewise to compete. Competition is a good thing. It brings innovation and better products over time.
Re: Doubtful
I guess we shall see. I'm betting that SpaceX has deeper pockets and greater capabilities to accomplish this than some network that failed a decade ago in Australia.

Game Changer
If this works as advertised, this will be a game changer. No more being stuck in the middle of nowhere without a way to communicate or request help.
Another Benefit of 5G Voice
5G has greater capacity than LTE and is comparable, in that respect, to CDMA voice. I think that 5G will be the best of both worlds once VONR becomes widespread. LTE, despite its speediness and clarity, will never rival CDMA for voice-call capacity. 5G should be able to do both and even more.
This Will Be a Game Changer
The reason most of us older folks bought cellphones in the first place was to have a way to contact someone in an emergency situation and vice versa. However, as network technology has improved, network coverage in certain areas has actually shrunk. I look forward to a time when you can make a call essentially anywhere outside.
Still Awaiting Android 12
I have a Samsung A32, which is slated to receive it, and here's 13 Beta! 😠
Re: Unlimited Data Doesn't Mean Unlimited Speed
It's unlimited data, not unlimited speed. There's no such thing as unlimited speed, hence my initial point.
Unlimited Data Doesn't Mean Unlimited Speed
Apparently, the entire world is stupid nowadays. Why would anyone think that their unlimited data would be at the highest speed possible? The concept is that if you exceed your high-speed cap, you don't get charged additional fees for whatever your phone uses passively or you use intentionally. That's what it has ALWAYS meant. If Mint were advertising unlimited high-speed data, then yea, that would be false advertising.
Why 5G Is Important
5G is basically CDMA 2.0 because it's not only super-fast wireless internet, but it also allows a whole bunch of multiple users to access voice and data simultaneously. That means fewer dropped calls, busy circuits, bad connections, etc.
The Achilles heel of LTE is that it does not handle calling very well when compared to CDMA. Therefore, one is less likely to connect a call during peak voice traffic or at large public gatherings. Big telecoms like Verizon and Sprint ...
Grandma Trap
Just what every kid wants: a faux smart watch that all their buddies will laugh about when they see it.
Grandparents, spend the money and get your grandkids a Fitbit or something else.
What Android 12 Needs
It needs the ability to set separate notification ringtones for individual contacts like iPhones have had for years. Allowing that feature for active conversations only is useless.
Re: Worry about.....
It's not spotty where I live and work. If it is where you live, then by all means, go with a wireless provider that covers you best.
Re: verizon already does this with "UW"
Not with regard to speed, 5G coverage, customer service, or network reliability, according to Consumer Reports. Verizon does have a much larger footprint, but that's only useful if you live and work in those areas.
This Is the Second New PTT Phone
T-Mobile has now incorporated two companies PTT flip phones into their lineup. Does anyone know which PTT platform they are going with? Will they continue with Kodiak's Direct Connect Plus, but rebrand it, or will it be Motorola's ESChat? Does anyone know?
Re: verizon already does this with "UW"
Nah, Verizon is the one trying to keep up with them.
Re: Say it Ain't So!
The purpose of my post was to underscore the hypocrisy of people who do wave away this sort of thing if it's their wireless or phone provider. However, if it's the other guy, they light into them without mercy.
Re: Yawn…..
I think that many of us were hoping for the satellite connectivity for emergency situations. Unfortunately, that went away fast, and now we're left with a phone that'll take better pictures. For me, I use low HD for videos and pics so they can be easily shared but still look good.
Say it Ain't So!
You mean to tell me that big companies get hacked and their data compromised? Oh wait, _______ issue was far worse because blah, blah, blah...
The truth is that ANYTHING data based can be hacked eventually by someone. All three national wireless carriers, app makers, computer manufacturers, cellphone companies, etc. have ALL experienced significant data breaches and fallen to hackers.
To all the haters out there, STOP using yet another data breach to peddle your "Brand X sucks, and here's proof" ...
Which PTT Solution, if Any, Will T-Mobile Use?
Will T-Mobile continue using Direct Connect Plus, ESChat, both or neither? Does anyone know?
Flip Phones Will Make a Huge Comeback
Once foldable-screen technology is perfected, and it looks as if we're getting closer, flip phones will make a huge comeback. Let's face it, as much as all of us love our smartphones, we're forced to make a decision: either get a mini phone with a small screen but easy to pocket, or get a big screen that's like carrying around a scientific calculator.
Here's to the best of both worlds! 🍻
AT&T Is the New Sprint
Verizon = Best Coverage
T-Mobile = Best Network
AT&T = Free stuff if you join us!
Seriously, AT&T now has nothing to distinguish itself from its competition. Nowadays, people want quality and value from everything they purchase, especially wireless service. AT&T needs to figure out what makes them better than the other guys. Right now, they have nothing.
Re: Too Frequent
Verizon has had the same problem since 2017. Their 2021 report of their own business reveals several areas where their customer's data was either compromised or stolen outright.
If you want to be safe from hackers, get a landline phone and don't talk to anyone you don't know on it. Otherwise, this sort of crap is just how it is living in the 21st century.
Re: Too Frequent
"Every other month it seems T-Mobile has a breach of data."
Umm, no. Data breaches, like the one AT&T is also experiencing currently, happen to all telecoms. T-Mobile is no worse nor better suffering through this than anyone else.
Typically a Competitor
This reeks of corporate espionage. Probably someone working for T-Mobile who leaked the info for a price.
FCC Map Also Is Inaccurate
Many areas where they show coverage have little to none.
Re: SprinTMobile is telling customers Jan 1st 2022
That's for their 3G and 1x networks. LTE and VoLTE Sprint customers will have a bit longer.
What Could Possibly Go Wrong?
I mean, we all know how reliable AI scanning tools are.
Sprint 3G Network Ends Sooner
End of calendar year marks the end of Sprint 3G.
Re: T-Mobile Maps its Expanded High-Speed 5G Coverage
All carriers have dead spots, depending on where you live. That's why it's always a good idea to check before you buy and see what works best where you live and work.
Direct Connect
I wonder if T-Mobile plans to re-brand Sprint DC as T-Mobile DC. I also am curious as to their future plans for that service.
Push to Wait
All PTT iterations nowadays, despite technological advancements in general for phones, are mediocre at best. Nextel was the one-and-only provider that ever managed to get an integrated system of phone/PTT/messaging right. It’s sad that Sprint dismantled their network to push LTE (garbage) tech.
It Will Be Missed
I can count on one hand the number of dropped calls I’ve had on CDMA networks over the years. By comparison, I can count the same number of times in one week on LTE.
