Spend a little time with it.
I purchased the Mpx 220 a week ago today and at first I was very disappointed. I was having all the troubles mentioned early in this forum. However, once I played with it for about two hours I now love it. You need to learn how it works before you can really understand all the feathers. You donât have to be a guru, just be good using a computer.
The number one thing is to set the profile to outdoor. This will fix a lot of the problems others where having with the phone volume, even speaker phone.
It does everything very well
-cell phone is great, never a dropped call, signal quality is always good
-contact / calendar management very easy
-load applications, never has it locked up nor needed to be reset
-camera is good when you get the right settings
-modem for pc
-lots of memory
-external memory expansion slot - nice to have this flexibility for MP3s, pics, etc
-good battery life if you turn off Bluetooth
-speakerphone works well with the profile set to outside (just push the call button)
-Bluetooth, it's nice not to have wires for a headset and activesync
-Video capture not the greatest but nice to have in a pinch
-e-mail is great-I can check both my Pop3 account and Hotmail account
-Windows media player is great
-many more features
Pros:
1. ActiveSync with Outlook (Contact, Calendar; Task)
2. Lots of main data storage, plus MiniSD card capacity
3. Blue tooth capability. Great with my headset, laptop, and desktop
4. Right size, Good compromise between keyboard and screen size
5. Phone functions easily accessible
6. Speed Dial Functions can also load software programs
Cons:
1. Does not come with Wi-Fi. Big mistake by Motorola that would have made this the ultimate phone
2. Picture quality taken with the camera is not the best but better than my v400, v600
3. On my v400, v600 the time would change automatically when I entered into a different time zone Mpx220 will not
4. Batter life when Bluetooth is turned on
Some people are too picky.
Great Smartphone. The Motorola MPx220 has easily replaced my HP iPaq 2215. This phone does everything my iPaq does, plus some.
The camera works great compared to all other cheap cell phones if you have a little patients and adjust a few settings. All good cameras require slight adjustments for optimum results.
Construction light, flimsy & big? I don't agree with it being flimsy & big at all. But light? Isn't that what you want it to be. If you want weight then buy a pda phone/brick.
I could go on and on...
Bottom line, this phone feels great in your hands, is extremely easy to use and a very powerful tool.
But this is only my opinion, as all posted here are.
Great Phone
This phone is great.
It does many things very well
-contact / calendar management
-load applications (maps,video,etc)
-email
-camera is good when you get the right settings
-great speech recog
-modem for pc (decent speed)
-lots of memory
-good battery life
-many more features
Make sure you get version 1.3 of firmware (black dot on side of box). Earlier versions have many issues.

I know there are a lot of power users out there and I'm not one of them. I just stepped out of the dark ages of a Nokia 6130 TDMA phone on the AT&T Wireless to the Mpx220 & Cingular. I know, they are now one in the same.
Review:
If you are looking to give up your PDA, Cell Phone, Digital Camera and get one device to do it all; KEEP LOOKING. Each device above is specialized for one task and to excel in that one task.
PDA Function: If you are used to using the Pocket PC format, you will find it very familiar. It keeps information organized just like Outlook and imports it easily. You have your calendar, contacts and tasks. However, it is not a full blown PDA and should not be compared to one. Think of it as PDA Lite.
Digital Camera Function: It is a snapshot generator. The flash does very little to help and pictures inside are grainy. It is not a dedicated camera and should not be compared to one.
Cell Phone Function: This is itâs primary design and in this it excels. Outside of hearing a growling noise once in a while when in a low signal strength area and the LOW ringer volume, I have no complaints. The voice recognition works well, not perfect, but well. I like the fact that I donât have to go through and record voice tags. The phone does a good job of matching my voice to the phone directory. Too bad I canât do this from the headset, sigh.
Summary: As and addition to my PDA and Digital Camera, this phone excels. I love the fact that I can use the web (notice I did not say cruise, Itâs no cable modem) in the field. Is there room for improvement? Yes. Does it beat other phones which I saw in wireless stores for about the same $245 ($345-$100 rebate) I paid at Best Buy? By several miles. I think that Motorola has gone a long way in raising the bar. I canât wait to see what they come out with in the future (beyond the R3). By the way, MP3 Player, nice touch.
So, would I buy it again? YES

almost there, but no cigar
i bought this phone for my girlfriend and i have to say that this phone has great features.
pro:
-screen
-feel of the phone
-sound of ringtones; mp3 ringtones sound very clear, stereo.
-blue tooth; able to connect with laptop and transfer files and use as secondary speaker phone.
-battery ok;for a phone this powerful
-easy access of memory card
-sound quality ok,speaker phone acceptionally effective
-sync with outlook,files on pc
con:
-browsing through menus could be a litle slow at times.
-no way known to transfer contacts from sim to phone and back; could be done but very painful.
-camera bad at highest quality, but found pictures to be ok at 640x480.
-no support from motorola. whencalling motorola to find out how to copy contacts to phone i got disconnected twice, both times at the same exact point in troubleshooting. we were at the point i contacts were there were no option to copy to phone in the menu in contacts. if they did not know thats fine but you did not have to hang up on me. i did not get to tell them about the problem of the camera, when camera is on highest qualiy the picture is captured with squiggly lines.
-no installed programs to edit word,power point or excel programs like the pocket pc. phone has program to read only.
-overall configuring phone can be a little difficult. bluethooth was a pain to configure so you can send files to the phone.
in conclusion: this is a powerful phone and i think that motorola did not do the job on support for this phone. if there is known problems with software i don't think hanging up on customers is the way to fix the problem. other than that i like the phone. sound was not as bad as stated in a lot of reviews. if you want the phone go and try it out. especially if you can take advantage of a trial period.

The phone was supposed to be released yesterday at cingular and att stores. I called and they told me that shipments have been delayed for unknown reasons. It could be that many people have complained to Motorola for the crappy camera and low volume. It figures to have a phone that matches the OS that it has. You have microsoft mobile, which is a half-made, rush product like all of MS products, so you have to have a phone to match. Hopefully I am right and they fix the phones. It would be a shame to ruin Motorola's improved reputation over this phone.
great phone...but!
i just paid $500 for this phone at Best Pricey! The phone has tons of features that I'm sure I will be able to use and have fun with.... but! I have to tell you that this phone has the worst sound level for it's ringer and the speaker phone. The ear piece gets up so you can hear it in your car but out in the field or in the car the ringer doesn't make it, you can't hear it!If you tried the speaker you would have trouble too. Both these features are important to me so....maybe it's time to return it.

This phone has everything that I've ever wanted in a phone, and they all work reasonably well. Let me go down my pro and cons list. btw, I'm not reiterating the obvious ones such as the fact that it has Camera, PDA etc.
Pros:
- Very nice sleek design
- Very light
- Nice crisp color screen both interior and exterior. Looks very very sharp. ANd the screen is pretty big too.
- All the buttons are very easy to press. They are all soft and don't require much strength or lot of thumbing and pressing of the fingers to be turned on/off.
- It's not too small. I thought this would be a con, but it turns out, I felt much more comfortable talking on it than my much smaller Samsung A530.
- It's pretty fast. I mean, ya, sometimes, you have to wait a second for you to go to the next menu screen and stuff, but in general the speed is pretty acceptable.
- You have to try out the MS Mobile OS. It's got so many damn functions. I've used Palm before, and MS mobile blows it away IMO.
It's really like having microsoft windows in your phone. It's awesome.
Cons:
- Camera is horrendous. Maybe I have to change some settings to make it look better, but it seemed more like a 100k pixel camera than one mega pixel camera.
- Another thing about camera is that flash doesn't work. I think the flash and the time the camera takes the picture is not in sync.
- Similary, video camera has been pretty much unusable so far.
- To get to many of the functions, you have to go through the Start button and then navigate through several menus. So for instance, if I wanted to take a pic, you have to go through like 2 menu screens before I can take a pic. Somewhat cumbersome, but for some reason, I haven't found this to be too annoying yet. I wish there was like a hot button or something you can program so that when you press it, it opens that application. The OS has something like most recently used programs type of function though.

CONS
Volume in normal mode is a bit quiet, I found I had to put the phone Outdoor mode to fix this.
The Camera on this phone is a total disaster; you can adjust the brightness before you take the picture which helps a little, but everything still comes out very grainy. Totally unacceptable Moto.
Battery, they could have included a little bigger battery, but they phone uses very little power in standby, and I have to admit I have yet to ever drain it below 40% in a single day from a full charge. It charges quickly.
Its a great phone; It would be practically perfect in my mind if they fix the camera. I put in a few movies, MS Pocket maps, and the Nes Emu, and its definitely a head turner. You will get alot of "What! Your phone can do that!?"

the new model (with the orange or black stickers on the box) is not all that much better than the original. i ended up getting mods done. oh and im a tmo customer so i had to configure the entire phone for t-zones, mms, etc.
pro's:
-when using mem card instead of internal mem, games and compressed dvd movies worked flawlessly.
-bluetooth synced perfect with my pda, computer, and headset
-custom mp3 ringtones (when set at 340 kbits) were loud
-camera, when set to night mode with high white balance, took clear pictures both at night and day. i've printed some of the pix i took on a 4x6
-tmobile service had lots more bars than cingular/att in certain areas of my house.
con's:
-rather on the big side considering i went from the e715.
-cant have blue tooth on when near a microwave. ive had really loud high pitched noises yell at me.
