EVDO clarification

I used to have a Samsung 650 that I could set up as a modem, using just the minutes on my phone. I'm looking for another phone now, that can do the same. The 8600 looks sooo pretty, I'd like to get it, especially since my new every two comes due in a few days, it'll just cost me $29.

Is that what the EVDO is, or is it an extra monthly charge on this phone? This is still the 1X network, right, not the broadband network, cause I'm pretty sure, where I live, we don't have broadband wireless available yet.

Thanks for any insight you guys can give me!

EVDO is the high-speed network, don't have to pay extra for it. It's part of the coverage. It has nothing to do with using the phone as a modem, just means it will be faster if you're in a EVDO area. You can check on Verizon's site (broadband coverage area on the map) to see if you're in it, or if you have a EVDO capable phone it will show the signal meter for it. It's only in major metro areas right now. I live in Birmingham, AL and we just got it about 3-4 months ago.

But do you have to pay extra to use EVDO network for your pda or PC through the phone? What is the current plan?

Thanks for your reply. That's broadband for internet access, but for the phone only, right? I used to be able to use my SamSung 650 as a modem for my computer, using Verizon's 1X network. It was faster than dialing my ISP's modem pool. I'd just use it from time to time, when travelling looking for a hotel, and stuff like that... it was really convenient.

Anyway, I was looking further into this, and it looks like the feature has been disabled if you're using bluetooth to connect between the phone and the computer? What about a cabled connection? Is there a data cable that'll still work?

btw, I live in a state that doesn't have EVDO yet... plus I live in the country... I doubt if we'll ever get EVDO here. It's a wasted feature for...
