I just got this phone. When I am talking to someone, I can hear myself and it sounds like I am talking in a tin can. The person that I am speaking with sounds okay. This is so annoying. Is this inherent in this phone or is something wrong with mine?

That's called side tone. It's a way that you can tell that you aren't disconnected from a call. It's a feature only the best DESIGNED phones have.
I don't necessarily like Motorola over others, but it makes Motorola phones sound like a landline.
You've been used to talking into a phone with no feedback.
It's like talking on a microphone in a studio with the headphones on. Top drawer.

How do you think it makes Motorola sound like a landline. My home phone doesn't have any feedback. All my other cell phones sounded exactly like talking on a landline.

If you try a wired phone, vs a cordless, especially a bell phone, you will hear some 'sidetone', or be able to hear yourself.
I just checked my Vtec cordless and it provides sidetone.
This is a feature of full duplex. When you get disconnected or your cord pulls out of the wall, no feedback. It is a bit amazing how folks have become used to talking into dead boxes.
It does a good job of eliminating the "there I was talking away to dead air. Where did we get disconnected?" WADR, most people aren't used to listening while they are talking.
It was mentioned that it also reduces the 'rudeness factor' by providing folks some feedback of their voice so they don't make everyone around them involuntarily share their conversations!

Capt. Jeff, What you said does make sense. I guess I am one of those people that are totally use to speaking into dead phones. Well, as long as I know for sure that I don't have a defective phone. Other than this, I do love the phone. So this is a good feature of the phone? I guess I will have to try to get use to this.

I think it's a very good feature of Motorola in general.
I always appreciated it when I was using some of the first phones, as you could hear how bad your connection was!
I consider it a VERY desireable feature for a few reasons, one is this-
I am out cycling a lot, and if I get wind noise or road noise that overcomes my voice I can tell. With the Samsung phone, I'd never know unless I was told "all I hear is wind rumble" etc, and honestly, people often just say, yea, yea.... and later when what we talked about never happened,... "I really didn't hear you say that as we had a real bad connection!"

You'll find this funny- I always listen to the sidetone when I am giving a PA announcement on the airplane, because it does happen that ...

I just bought a v3m dark silver model and had the same issue. It went away though when I stopped using the phone on MAX volume. so I keep my phone on #6 not 7 .

Where do you find the volume control? I have only found it on the ringer. I set the volume control on the outside of the phone all the way, but I don't recall seeing any settings. It only stated to increase or decrease volume control for the ear piece when making a call. Can you elaborate on this alittle more? Thanks.

This is one of my favorite features of Motorola phones. I suppose if you get used to talking into a cell phone, you get used to not hearing yourself. However, when I use someone else's cell phone it becomes clear ho much better this sounds.

Try talking into a landline and then talking into your cell phone that is not a Motorola. Huge difference.
