Is there a Limit to SD Memory Size that is Useable?

bradesp

Does anyone know if there is a hardware or operating system limitation regarding the size of SD card one can use in the Q? I realize cost and SD limits may make larger SD cards impractical, however within 2 years it's likely we'll see 16Gig SD cards for under 400 bucks and 32 gig SD cards for uner 1K. When that happens, I truly wont need my MP3 Player, PROVIDED the Phone and/or the Windows Mobile platform will work with this large a memory card.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Is it really 2GB? Because 4GB is coming out soon, or is mini SD like CF where the hardware does indeed have a max?

This is the crucial question for me.
I need at least 3GB for my music. If the Q can't handle 4GB or if 4GB miniSD's aren't coming out, I need to buy an iPod and may want to get a cheaper phone instead.

I think its a matter of someone trying the larger minisd cards on it. Back when I had my v710, Moto advertised the limit being 128 mb, but I purchased a 256 mb card, and it worked fine.

The same thing happened with my Olympus Stylus 410 Camera. They advertise the limit as being 512 mb, but I purchased a 1 gb card and it works fine (slightly slower though on boot up).

I think none of us will really know until one of us tries it.

2gig should be fine, that's still using the FAT16 system used by 256/512/1gig/2gig cards.

The 4gig miniSD cards will likely not work unless the device has a firmware update.

This is because presently these flash cards use a FAT16 based file system which is limited to 2gigs in size. To allow it to handle more a new standard has been released for SD moving it to a FAT32 file system with the potential to reach 32gig storage sizes.

However, most devices will need a firmware update in order to utilize the new memory and some may not be able to access at all.

Crucial? Wow, I never realized mp3 files were crucial to anything. 😲 You mean you might have to buy two of the 2gb cards an switch them and be limited to only 500 songs at any given time? 👀

*gasp*

300 songs on a 2GB card for me. Even 4GB is not ideal. Ideally, I'd like to have 10GB and keep my music in a lossless format as it is on my computer. I'd settle for lesser quality for the sake of convenience but switching back and forth between 2 cards cancels out and convenience that a single cell/mp3 device would have offered.

I went to a data training on this phone about a month ago or so. They announced that as of right now the max capacity is 2GB, however capabilities to use up to a 4GB are in the works. Hope this helps!

I had the same question (see earlier post with same exact title).

Nobody could answer so I called Moto software.
Basically - they will tell you that you should not use a card bigger than the biggest card Moto offers (1Gb) - because they want you to buy their sponsored accessories. They tell you this by saying "we've never tested it with anything bigger -so you shouldn't try it either". They said the limit to the v710 was 128Mb under the same guise.

They told me on the phone that 1Gb was the biggest they could guarantee would work, but also confirmed that there is nothing in the hardware / software that would prevent you from going bigger.

I posted a link a few weeks ago with a GREAT special from buy.com on a Sandisk 2Gb for $24.0...

That's so odd... I could have sworn I saw one a few weeks ago.

Anyway - Buy.com is having another sale on the 1Gb for $24.00 with rebate.
