Honestly, I'm glad - Motos are rather well designed, but poorly manufactured. I've heard enough complaints in my dept. about the MPX220 ("Why did I trade my Treo for THIS!?!?" & the like) and other Motos (the V180 - lamest phone ever!). Of course, maybe since it's NOT on Cingular, it'll be more reliable.
However, I too am surprized that the GSM/UMTS version isn't out first. I would expect such a device to be out in the rest of the world (which doesn't really use CDMA much) to get it first, as was the case with the V3i.

The MPx220 was not actually designed or made by Motorola. They mostly just took a Chi Mei phone and branded / distributed / supported it. It was a bit of an embarrassment for them, which exactly why they changed strategy and brought smartphone design in-house, starting with the Q.
The V180 is a low-low-end phone. The emphasis there is price (something carriers can give away for free). Therefore I don't think it's fair to use that as a benchmark for Motorola quality.

Yeah, play with the V551/V557 or the ROKR and tell me their build quality is bad.

I work in b2b support for Cingular, so I deal with all sorts of customers & other reps, and I've taken more complaints about ALL motos (not just the cheap V180 & V220). The V551 is probably the single most returned/defective phone we have. Granted, it's also one of the more popular, but it's rate of defect is still disproportionately high for a phone of supposedly higher quality. The ROKR is a quality phone? Again, the design of most Motos is rather nice, they're sleek & innovative (RAZR, SLVR, & Q are good evidence), but the ROKR felt as cheap as my trusty Nokia 3595, but not nearly as solid (I've THROWN my 3595 to the floor during a call, & it stayed on!). In my customer care days, I took countless complaints from customers about all sor...

Sorry Rich, but I used to be an apologist fo' Motorola myself. The first step towards freein' yourself is to admit that you have a problem. 🙂
Anyways, I can't defend Moto anymore... not after my friends' v260s and v265s started dyin' after only a few months. And after hearing about all the loose RAZR keypads. Just inexcusable keee-rap, but Moto keeps on making the same mistakes over and over again, seems like.
Moto has a LOT to prove in terms of improving their build quality, an' I can only hope they stop shootin' themselves in the foot here. You'd think after emptying the clip into their big toe, they'd holler "OWWW! That DOESN'T FEEL GOOD!" and stop, but somehow...

GSM vs. CDMA war, mad funny!!! People always say GSM is better and stuff but GSM is trash and you know it. Most popular standard in the world is GSM, speaking of popular Ford also sells the best too.
