Media Net or Data Plan

primal5

Hey guys, I have a question. My 8125 arrives tommorow and Im wondering if I have to sign up for the more expensive unlimitted data plan Cingular offers or if I can get away with using MediaNet.

On my Treo 650 I was able to get away with MediaNet even though Cingular said I needed the Data Plan, on my Blackberry I had to get the data plan....

Any help or suggestions in appreciated......

I don't have any sort of data plan. I just use the WiFi when I am near a hot spot.

Yeah WI-FI is fine if Im near a hotspot but Im trying to figure out if I can get away with using Media Net for 19.95 instead of the PDA Connect for $40.....

They will probably recommend an unlimited MediaNet package......especially if you're going to be using the network a lot.......

I believe most devices that don't actively synchronize with a network (blackberrys DO) should be able to get away with using MediaNet as data is transmitted over the gsm channel along with voice and sms...........

Blackberry's utilize the data channel, and it is added to the accound first, then the voice plan..........

Hope that helps....

vpu2....OUT!!!!

They should both work, but the unlimited data plan will have a faster throughput, so they say. 🙂

Thanks for the info, I just go the phone yesterday and so far so good. I signed up for the pda data plan but will switch to a media net plan next month to see if it works....

If it does then even better 😁 I dont have to spend the extra cash.....

I am in the process of purchasing the 8125 through cingular, and I have a treo 650 with an unlimited media net plan as well. They are telling me that I have to drop this package and sign up for the pda connect plan and purchase everything else seperately. I would like to know how you made out. I really think they are full of crap!

If you sync via exchange what should you get? the PDA unlimited or the Media Net Unlimited?

Well to get technical the PDA unlimited plan for 39.99 uses a public APN. It allows faster transfer speeds. The unlimited Media Net plan uses a Private Cingular APN and will have slower data speeds. If you are using your PDA allot for internet or if you are pushing your E-mail from outlook you will want the 39.99 plan. If you are using the Media Net plan and they see you are using a large amount of data on a device that shouldn't be on the Media Net plan they can charge you per Kb for all of your data. I have heard of horror stories of gigantic bills. Just an FYI.

Hey Guys,

I work for Cingular..
Policy is that the correct data package is the PDA connect plan. Media Net would technically work, but is subject to removal by the company. Basically this device allows you to use way more data than your average mobile PHONE, so they're going to put you on something more appropriate for that amount of data.

Thanks for the information. I try not to use a lot of Data, i currently have the Media Net 5 MB. Just curious about the exchange sync and how much more it would cost me. Thanks for the help.

So can you continue to use your media net package with the 8125 for web browsing and email?

Yeah - I went to the store today - I need to get a text messaging plan on top of the pad plan on top of the voice plan. Will probably still be cheaper than VZW.

BTW - seriously considering the Nokia 9300 - that baby looks sweet.
