Isn't the slot the access to the speaker when your flip is closed?...Bill

Actually the "microphone opening" is not that grille below the operator button.
It is that little tiny hole to the right of the pound key.
Cover it up and see if anyone can hear you. They may be able to but it really muffles the sound so I don't think the outside hole has anything to do with the microphone.

Hmmm, OK so what is the grille for under the
0(zero)...and also when I use the speakerphone when flip is closed, how is anyone hearing me if that small grill isn't a speaker? In other words how is anyone hearing me if the small hole is the only speaker and is covered up with the flip closed? Maybe the small grill slit and the hole are both speakers?

Why does my custom VAJA case have an opening in the case for that grill if it doesn't have some function?

Don't know why the VAJA case has an opening but probably because it is the perceived "mouthpiece"....
Try this: Cover the little hole and try to talk to someone.
Then remove fingers from phone hole and see the difference.

I asked myself that same question but have tried speaking into every hole in the phone while a friend was on the line and had the flip closed.
When my mouth got around to the side where the infamous hole was, she was able to hear me.
The hole is off to the side and I really think the sound (which does travel around corners) still makes its way into that same Mic hole.

Well, it's been fun, but I think we've reached an impasse. I just don't think "they" would put a slit in the phone, cover it with a protective screen without having any function!

Thanks for the replies

That happens all the time for cosmetic purposes etc. when things are designed. All I can tell you is the hole on the side it the mic, the slits under the "O" are cosmetic and do not have a function.
