1) why does the external screen go blank when you open the phone? when you make a call, the inside screen shows who you are calling and you can't see the date and time info anymore.

The external screen going blank prevents unecessary battery drainage. The time and date is displayed on the internal screen except during a call. Very few people are going to need to look at the front screen during the call with the phone open. If one were to do so, he won't be able to hear his caller except in speaker mode. If you are in speaker mode, you can close the phone and then be able to view the front screen. However, in speaker mode with the phone closed, the front display shows the duration of the call and not the time and date during a call.

That screen is blank, but it doesn't save any power since the backlight is on!
