Outside screen issue thingy

Apparently I'm one of a zillion people trying to decide between the LG VX8100 and the Samsung A950. Both of them have every feature that I care about and more, and apparently both have adequate performance (there seem to be two schools of thought on the volume of the 8100, but I know several people who have the phone and don't have the problem people describe here).

So I went to the VZW store today to view the phones side by side. From my point of view, the 950 has three advantages over the 8100:

  • the internal antenna,
  • the phone is smaller, and
  • the speakerphone can be used with the flip closed.

I adore these three things, but the whole thing is thrown out the window for me by the facts that (1) the outside ...

I have the 950, and yep-- sadly, there is no way to keep the outside screen on.. This was big for me too, since my last phone was an LG 4400 which always had the time showing, too. I'm getting used to it, however. You just have to get in the habit of holding one of the buttons down about 1 1/2 secs before looking down at the time.

I have to say that the reception has been one of the most impressive things about this phone, and that is the bottom line with phones in the first place. Sound is clear as a bell, literally.

All of the things I read about so many people having problems with the sound going in and out swayed me away from the 8100. It just seems far too prevalent to risk.

I'm still pondering whether to get this phone...in fact, I'm still kind of teetering toward it...so I'm glad you said you're getting used to it. I'm not eligible to upgrade until October 27th, so I still have some time to decide, but like I said, I love those few advantages the Samsung has. And for me, it's about half the price of the LG right now, so that's another advantage. 😎

Ill give you an answer, though you wont like it. When there is a missed call or text message, the screen will go black after 10 or so seconds after it was received. There is no way to make it like your 4500

As far as being alerted to new text mssgs, new pix/flix, or missed calls, there is an option to set your alerts to go off either once, every 2 mins, every 15 mins, or 'OFF.'

Thus, even with the external screen not always on, you'll still get a vibrate or notification alert as often as every two mins if you miss anything.

Also, you can change the setting to be different for each thing. For example, have a reminder set for every 15 mins for missed texts, while another set for every 2 mins for a missed call.

I finally went down to the verizon store and saw that...I also found out the screen doesn't stay on on the 8100 either...(though is does stay on longer,,,)...

one thing though.....I didn't see a reminder set for missed calls....only text, voice mail,etc.....does the 950 have a missed call alert?....

thanks for the reply

With the 8100, though, you only have to tap ANY key on the outside and it will come right back on.

As far as I see, no alert for missed calls.

-The front screen will display an icon and read "Missed Call"

Of course, if the person leaves a voicemail and you have the voicemail alert on, the phone will go-off every 2 mins, 15 mins, or however you set that..
