V-Cast + Mobile Web 2 vs. Mobile Web 2 alone

SHIVA

Hi, My question doesn't concern the fee but it is about performance and download speed alone.

Does Mobile Web 2, perform any differently with or without V-Cast option?

FYI, Mobile Web can be had for $5/mnt, but it uses call time minutes, V-Cast for $15 includes unlimited Mobile Web too.

Thanks, S

If speed is your main concern, as long as you're in an Ev-DO coverage area, you don't need the VCAST feature. You'll have the high speed anyway.

not according to the 2 techs I talked to at verizon..(and its been mentioned on this forum also)....if you don't have V Cast, the 2.0 gets transmitted at the national access speed.....even in a V Cast area...

also,
here's what I finally realized...(mmaybe I'm wrong)...but with a normal flip phone(like my 4500)....when I'm driving(for instance),I take the phone out..flip it up,and can use the speaker phone.....and if I need to input numbers,I can...(or listen to messages,etc)....how can you do that with this phone?..even as a normal phone that you can hold and talk and listen to on speaker function, you're supposed to hold it in the open position to be able to hear the speakers?....I'm not g...

This handset is probably not going to have the same functionality as the 4500 (which I have as well, btw), but I don't know as I haven't had a chance to play with a working model. It would be cool if it functioned the same way since it's also a bar phone. The only thing it would lack is the flipping capability. Remember, it's still a fully functioning phone while closed.

That's anyone's guess really. I don't really see why not, though.

Well, I think its going to be a great phone. but as I've seen in the past where a phone is given so much advertising and information just to end up drowning and fading away in time (Motorola V710 for example). So I wouldn't be surprised if there is a drastic price drop in the first 2-3 months of sale, or maybe even a bogo offer.

Well, I hesitate to jump in, as I haven't touched a vx9800 yet, but here goes...

I think the design problem is that the speakers are inside the clamshell. When you close the phone, the speakers are highly obstructed and would be useless for a speakerphone. That being the case, the engineers went for "ease of use" and just made the speakerphone come on when you open the clamshell. No extra buttons or menu options needed.

Love it or hate it, there you go...

(And sorry if it's a faux pas to revive old threads, I'm new here.)

When VCAST is removed, two features are added in its place, one is to allow access to the NationalAccess network when out of Ev-DO coverage area and the other is to allow access to the BroadbandAccess network (the VCAST feature has both these features embedded). So, you may want to call again and speak to another tech (make sure it's a tech and not a Customer Care rep) because the information they gave you is incorrect.

That is completely incorrect. I have a friend that has the LG 8100, and he does NOT have V-Cast. He still gets EVDO speeds on his phone when browsing the mobile web.

It's true...if you don't have the vcast, you will be downloading with the national access speed, I am a rep and have tried it out on other phones.....I don't see why this one would be ne different...

With the V-cast you can get a nifty messenger trick, instead of using your test messages. Remember when it was part of web access, and used your minutes? Well same mentality, but with unlimited data on V-cast goto mm.yahoo.com from the browser. Voila, the old version that won't cost anything out of your messages.
Enjoy!!

Do you mean, instead of text messaging people, you can use IM? But that's nothing new. What's mm.yahoo.com? Thanks, S

Thanks for the feedback, not sure if we are getting anywhere. Are there any VZW techs around to offer a definitive answer to this question? Or should I just get V-Cast and cover my back, even though I have no intention to download video clips? S

I have given the correct information. VCAST is not required to take advantage of the BroadbandAccess network. So save yourself $15 a month. You will get it anyway provided you are in an Ev-DO coverage area.

If you are correct you mean save myself $10/mnt, since I would still have to pay for Mobile Web access.

Any other thoughts? Thanks in advance... 🙂 S

That's about the size of it. Can't think of anything else. I hope you enjoy your next phone and it doesn't go Motorola on you. 😎

By looking at my user name I assume you know i work for the company. Vcast is just something that we do so you can download the useless video clips and entertain yourself when you are bored. It uses our 1xEVDO network which is broadband. Guess what!? The feature is something new and we know we can jack up the price and people will still pay for it, so we decided to set the price on 15.00. But damn! With that price might as well toss on mobile web 2.0 for you, so the sales person can do a better pitch to our customers instead of “well with 15 dollars a month you can watch exciting video clips." Now they can say that plus" and you get our mobile web 2.0 also which you can check movie time, email, stock quotes, eBay, blah blah.."
