My Cingular contract expires Nov 28th and I am eligible to upgrade. Wanted to see how the sound quality is with the phone since ive read the complaints. Has it gotten better with a fix or were people just not setting the settings right?

Any ideas?

thanks a lot for your help. I dont want to make a mistake getting the phone, especially if i choose to get it outright and not extend my contract.

you're welcome.
same here. actually my contract ended in august and have been waiting for this phone, but in the mean time i found the SE z520(just released) and it's quad-band w/bluetooth. i have only used nokia so am a little shy about going to another brand.

i went from nokia to samsung, and have had nothing but problems with signal strength and sound quality.
i had a nokia3360 on the old TDMA cingular. Went to T-Mobile with the Samsung e715, not bad. Came back to Cingular for my work discount and got the e317 and have hated it since.

Now i was debating going to verizon where a lot of my friends are going but im not so sure.

the cool thing about not being choked in a contract, and have an unlocked phone, is that you CAN go to almost any carrier you want...unlocked phones cost more $ but i think it's worth the freedom.
a buddy of mine is with t-mo using a nokia and the only issue he has is with coverage.
what do your friends say about verizon?

well ones that have had it left cause they always went over minutes and had huge bills. Some friends have cingular now but are leaving cingular cause the coverage is not as good right where i live since we live on the border to Canada, verizon is a little better inside buildings, etc.

So its a tough call. I dont like any of verizons phones to be honest and if im gonna have a phone for a while, i want one i like, not a big bulky ugly one.

One complaint i have besides horrible sound on my phone is i cant manually change the network. So when it roams i have to wait for the phone to switch back to cingular since the option to change to manual is deactivated so i cannot select it.

To homeslice5484:

here's how to fix the volume issue:

1. Go to Menu
2. Settings
3. Call Settings
4. Automatic Volume Control - Switch to "ON".

That will fix the "Low Volume" issue that you've been reading about.

I was skeptical before buying the phone because of that issue. I read all the postings too. But after playing with the settings, I stumbled upon the Auto. Vol. Control and it has been great ever since. I actually have to turn down the volume because it's so loud after turning on the AVC.

Hope that helps.

I got this phone and it is true that the volume is lower then other phones I have had, but I think it's still perfectly OK. Have never had a problem with haring other people, but if you are eligible for an upgrade go ahead and getter a better quality phone. I thought that Nokia built quality, but it does not show in this model.

did you adjust the volume like the earlier poster said?

Yes I did, and it did make a little difference. I think Nokia just makes phones with low volumes, because my old 3120 was really low. In fact it was so low that I had to exchange it, but the 6102 if fine. However, as I mentioned before if you have an upgrade go ahead and buy a better phone. I don't think Nokia did a very good job with building a solid flip phone, it feels flimsy. The best thing to do is to go to the Cingular store and play around with the phones. Remember if you take it home and it's not what you expected, you always have the option to return it or exchange it.
