I just recieved my Nokia 6101 today. I found out last month that T-Mobile will have it sometime in the late 4Q, but I couldn't wait. So far, I'm liking it. The features are about the same as previous Nokia's. I don't quite like the quality of the pictures it takes. You can't zoom until after you take the picture. Video capture also captures sound too, which suprised me. The browser is pretty fast, but web page graphics are extremely limited.

That's what I've tested so far. I'm still reading the manual and figuring stuff out.
If y'all have any questions about it, feel free to ask.

How is the reception compared to other Nokia's? Be honest 😉

I've had two other Nokia's before and the reception is about same. I've always had good reception with Nokia's. But that's my opinion. 🙂

Have you made any calls on it? If so, does the person say the phone sounds? Also, how is the listening volume (loud & clear?) when you're talking to someone?

Finally, do the ringtones ring loud & are they of good quality?

Yes, I have made calls and they are clear sounding. The loudspeaker is clear too.
As for the ringtones, depending on which one you use, they can be too loud. Even at level 3. Quality....could be better. I found only four that I really liked.

Are the ringtones that come with it normal/standard ringtones, or are there corny ones?(for example my z500 came with cheesy ones--a baby crying, a rooster crowing, etc). I want some professional sounding ringtones (just normal). I download songs to my z500 & they sound good as ringtones.

I keep posting on the Cing. forum a question: do Nokia phones make good quality mp3 ringtones (like if you wanted a song for a ringtone). You know when you hear some peoples' phones and their mp3 songs sound crappy on the phone?

I like to change up my ringtones a lot, and it may sound stupid, but the ringtone quality may be the deciding factor (I'm happy with my z500 anyways but there are some things that could use improvement & I thought Nokia mi...

If your looking for professional ringtones, then you might not like the ones they have on the phone. Of course, now that may change when the USA version releases. I have a friend who works in the asian cell industry and that's how I got this one. So some of the ringtones sound sort of on the asian side.
I'm looking for MP3's (real songs)to download so I can hear what they sound like. How do you download yours? I'm kind of limited since this phone hasn't released in the States.

I use Audacity...it's free & works great for me. If you have songs on your computer in mp3 format, you can cut a portion of the song you want (a typical ringtone is probably about 17 seconds).

With this 17 second mp3 file, you just send it to your phone with a data cable or other means. You'll need some Nokia software that will allow you to transfer the mp3 file to your phone also.

What is displayed on the external screen of the 6101 when it's just in standby (is that the right word?--when you haven't touched the phone in awhile?)

On the z500, you have to actually press a side button to see the time or missed calls on the external screen...kind annoying.

You can assign a picture theme that would show on both the internal and external screen when it's closed. After about a minute, or you can set the timeframe, the external screen will show the time on a dark background. If you have a missing call or message, it will show on the external screen.

How is the menu set up?

I haven't had a Nokia in awhile. I don't really know how to ask this, but is the menu set up like you have to keep scrolling down to see the different options b/c only one option is shown at a time? Or, is everything in the menu visible at once (without having to keep scrolling down to see different options?)

There's a goto shortcut menu where have your favorites or most used choices. That one you have to scroll down. But there is the main menu that has icons for messages, phonebook, web, media...etc that is shown all at once.

So if you haven't pressed any keys for awile though, does the screen ever go completely black, or does the time/missed call actually stay visible.

On my z500, if you haven't pressed any keys for awhile, the screen goes completely black & you have to press a side key to see the time/missed call.

I haven't had a missed call/message stay on that long yet. I'll have to test it later. But I can tell you that the previous Nokia I had did keep the missed call/message on the screen until it was checked. If it doesn't, it would more than likely go back to showing the time. I will test it and get back to you.

I have tested it by sending a text message. It does switch back to a clock, but there is an envelope symbol on the screen to let you know that a message is waiting.

You're welcome. Battery life is very good. As you can imagine, I've been on it a lot. It only went down one bar just this morning. It took only 1 hour and 45mins to fully charge.

Have you used it on the highway yet? If so, did the person you were talking to say you sounded good (loud & clear w/ little background noise)?

Reason I ask is b/c my car is a little loud. When I'm on the highway, it picks up A LOT of background noise...people say it sounds like I'm in a tornado.

I want to see if Nokia is a little better at blocking out background noise (perhaps it's just my car).

Jul 22, 2005, 2:34 PM
No I haven't. It has an automatic volume control option that is supposed to automatically adjust according to the background noise, but not a filter to filter out background noises. I guess I could stand in front of a fan and make a call to test how much noise comes through on the other end. 🙂

Nothing that I can't get used to. I like having individual ringtones for each caller instead of groups. And I think Motorola's
predictive text is a little better than Nokia's. Other than that, it's a great phone so far. 🙂

I just tested it and yes, it does stay on when the flip is closed. You have to open it back up to hang up or wait until the other person does.

Do the side buttons have any function when the phone is closed? You know how on Motorolas you can change the profile (silent, loud, etc.) with the side keys?

Also, if you wanna silence the phone, is there a quick way to do it, or do you have to go through the menu? (On my SE you can just hold down the clear button and this will silence the phone).

Only the right hand button has a function and that's for taking a self portrait or push to talk. The volume button on the left side only has function when you are on the phone.
To silence a call, you acutally have to open it and press the end key within 1.5 seconds for it to go to voicemail.

And another answer to your question about call or message notification in standby mode. I received a call and message that I didn't catch and when that happens, a little missed call symbol shows. And if they left a message an envelope shows too along with the time.

i really cant wait. Last Nokia i had was the 3360 TDMA for Cingular. Since then I have used 2 samsung flip phones and it seems that samsung speakers are so Low in sound volume. Now the Samsung i have not only has low volume...but people break in and out and skip words, etc....and its horrible at holding a signal compared to other phones my family has from cingular. The speaker is loud and clear? how about size?
...
chocolatchild

Jul 21, 2005, 10:02 PM
The size is little smaller and the weight lighter compared to the Motorola V300 I was using. I like a phone that has a little weight to it. It has just enough.
I had the same problem with Samsung's too. I can never find the perfect phone. Motorola's have great features, but short battery life. Nokia's have a long battery life, but the features could be better. If only Motorola and Nokia could get together and make a phone, I would be one happy camper.

I dont use the internet on my phones..i dont download many ringtones, only a few to get a few i like..i send text messages and talk...so all i need is clear and LOUD sound...i dont like low sound..i need a nice clear loud speaker. I use the camera once in a while to take new wallpapers and stuff....so the nokia is nice for stuff like that? better than my samsungs? I like smaller light weight phones and it looks like its almost as small as my e317..

Yes, it's nice for that stuff, but could always be better. You'll have no problem with sound or the loudspeaker.
