Issues Clarification.

ok, I actually moved over from Verizon for this, (actually I just wanted GSM) but I have been readin the forums on this phone since it was announced and I just need some clarification.

The only issues I have are the random asking me if I want to copy sim contacts to phone (or visa versa) and at the same time it seems to delete my call log histories. Havent really noticed anything else.

I have read some of the Nokia Developer forums with little mention of these issues, and I have NOT tried replacing the MMC card (I will start another thread on this) but is there anything else I should be looking for?

Really the only pain I am having is getting used to Symbian, as this is the first one for me.

JPGecko, to get rid of these problems, all you need is to get ahold of a 32k SIM card. I'm willing to bet you got the 64k Smart SIM card.

Just get one off ebay and kiss your problems Bye bye.

It's much more complicated than that.

Icy,

I am surprised at your comment. It seems that Liquidmurr is mostly summarizing your earlier postings. Have you found other issues?

Yes, 32k sims are market related. Not just any 32k sim will work. It has to be one from your market.

Icyhot,

You are correct, the 32k Sims ARE market specific. The Cingular network actually is comprised of 3 networks, each of which has a Sim that is dedicated for it. If it is not initialized in that network, it will not work....I've had some hard headed customers who wanted to use those specific SIMS, and mailed the SIMS to relatives in those markets, had then initialized, and then resent them back to where ever they were.

On these problems concerning the call logs, and request to copy contacts.....I've talked to Nokia a couple times, with enough digging, the consensus is, that it is something to do with the firmware that Cingular added to the phone after nokia shipped it to them. The need to have the phone for evaluation, and to come...

Absolutely correct my friend. I am resigned to wait on a FW upgrade, and that is fine with me. Just don't want anything to happen with my phone while it's not in my possession, plus having the inconvenience of having to ship it away. Wouldn't it be nice if life was perfect??

So you're not using a 32k SIM now, Icy?

I just ordered one, how can I tell if it's for my market?

No, Cingular deactivated my 32k accidentally, and now mine doesn't work. There is a 16 digit number on there, so when you get it, call or go by your local store and they can tell you if it will work before they activate it.

Out of curiosity, what are those 3 markets, and how are they annotated on the card itself to identify it to one of the 3 markets??

Update: I got a 32k from a friend in Tennessee, had it activated in Georgia at my local store and it works like a champ.

Have you found out how to determine what market a 32k sim is specified for?

Also, do you know what limitations are incurred by using a 32k sim?

Don't know how to tell what market it works in and no limitations that I know of.

Wait. You are talking MEMORY CARD, and we are talking SIM card. Two totally different things. Your 512mb will be just fine.

good point.
I guess I was not thinking of sim cards in terms of memory size...

I just looked and I have a 64K card.

should I be tring to get a 32K card?

and if so (becuase I am new to GSM...)

how do I get my info moved from one card to another?

Hi Icy,

So are you inclined now to believe, as I think was mentioned in another post, the 32k sim is only a temporary fix, the issues will return eventually ? Sure, the ultimate fix is a firmware upgrade to better work w/64k.

My 32k sim shipped yesterday (bought on eBay).
I am wondering whether or not to bother now having it activated. I will IF Cingular 100% assures me that I can reactivate my 64k if I so desire. I will get the person full name and if they said yes (I was already told yes by a Cing rep) and later find it can't be done, I will make them give me a new 64k for free.

No I think it is a permanent fix, but can't see spending money on EBAY on a chance it isn't the one you need for your market. If I had one and I knew it worked in my market, I would use it in a heartbeat.
