Wi-Fi Costs?

I was told by Verizon when I bought my i730, that, no matter how I accessed the internet on my phone that I would be charged for it? To me, this makes no sense at all. What if I get to the internet through my home wireless DSL system, how or why would Verizon charge me for that?
Has anyone else gotten this same speech from Verizon? And is there any truth to what they are saying?

Perhaps what they mean is that you have to subscribe to a PDA/Smartphone plan in order to buy the phone (at least that's what I was told). So maybe they mean you are paying for it anyway?

If you access the Internet via Wi-Fi, they can't charge you (you aren't even using the "phone" at that point).

And if you are paying for an unlimited EVDO plan, Verizon would probaby prefer that you use your DSL or cable to connect via Wi-Fi than consume their EVDO bandwidth.

I used a samsung i730, not activated, in my home w/ my wifi on cable and reached speeds of 4200kbps!! Obviously, they couldn't charge you for a non activated phone. 😁
