Using minutes for EVDO instead of $80 access plan

Currently I own a Motorola V710 on Verizon's network. I also own a Dell Axim PocketPC. I Connect to the Internet (VZW National Access) via bluetooth to the V710. In the past I owned a Samsung i700 and also connected to the National Access network for internet. In both cases, I have been using minutes from my calling plan (as opposed to paying $45 extra per month for service). I figure free minutes on nights and weekends and rarely use it during day, so why pay the extra fee?

So my question is, can I configure the i730 to connect to VZW's EVDO service using MINUTES from my calling plan (like I did with i700 to National Access)and not have to pay the $80 a month extra?

If so, then I would rather bump my minutes plan up for an extra $20 ...

EV-DO on pda phones is only $49.99 ($44.99 if you have a voice plan). From what I have heard from the reps there is no option for using only minutes for data usage.

Thats the sams BS response all the reps give. Thats cause they are trained to sell SERVICE. My old Samsung i700 and my surrent Moto V710 get onto VZW internet (National Access) with minutes. All you have to do is configure a dialup session:
Call number: #777
Username: 2125551212@vzw3g.com (your phone number@vzw3g.com)
Password: vzw

Thats it! Nothing to it. It uses up regular plan minutes. Free nights and weekends.
Now the big question is, can this be done with EVDO??

Do you spend the $5/month for the MobileWeb opition? Because I do the same thing now with my V710, but the people I know without MobileWeb have been unable to use thier minutes to get online. This being a PDA phone, Verizon might not offer MobileWeb with it, and only have the PDA plan.

That said, it kinda seems like they may not enable the phone to work as a modem. If the phone could work as a modem, why would they go through the trouble to disable the DUN profile, when you could just hook it up with USB.

Being familiar with VZW quite a bit I can tell you that it is NOT possible to get an EVDO phone on VZW's network connected to data Without the EVDO plan. There are all kinds of stop guards to prevent that. And yes as I understand it VZW has done everything in their power to make sure that a customer can not use an EVDO phone as a modem. There are obvious reasons for this and I will not comment as to whether they are good or bad I will not comment on whether or not I even agree with them. I will say that there are even VZW people that are responsible for Data in the org that are actually under the delusion that VZW coined "EVDO" and that it is our "Branding for 3G" um hello our branding is Broadband Access w/plans like V Cast and Nationa...

I have an LG8000 and can use the phone as a modem at EVDO speeds. I connect to my laptop using the cable for the LG7000. I've tested the speeds and it runs around 500 kbps. I do have the $15/mo vcast plan but, so far at least, I've seen no data charges since February when the phone came out. Nights and weekends are still free meaning unlimited data access. I don't think Verizon can distinguish a tethered data session from a Vcast stream, but I suppose they can monitor overall data throughput and tag you if the usage is extreme. But, again, I've been able to use it occasionally for net access at both 1x and EVDO speeds and no additional data charges have appeared on my bill. I'll enjoy it while it lasts. Eventually, as additional phon...

Thanks Fubar!

That info is invaluable to me. While I currently connect to the internet with regular National Access via my Dell Axim X30 and Motorola V710 (w/bluetooth), I am planning to upgrade soon to either Motorola E815 and a Dell X50v or converge to one device with the Samsung i730. But with your confirmation, I feel hopeful that I can make it work with at least the E815 option.

I do not have mobile web or pay $5 amonth or anything else extra. I just configured a Bluetooth bond with my Pocket PC and Laptop. Then I just run the Dial Up connect wizard on laptop or configure PPC. Real simple.

This configuration works fine on my V710 which I bought when it first came out (before all the extra function disabling was added to the V710s) and also on my Dad's V710 which he bought from Verizon 2 months ago (post all the software disabling).

You never said if you were using a cable of some sort or were doing this through BT (DUN)...

Anyway, I can't figure out why you would pay ( if it were possible) $20 extra each month to use minutes and connect and 14.4 kbps instead of paying $24.99 for 10MB (read limitless minutes< just data ticker) or $44.99 for UNL DATA and connect at 60-80 kbps peaks at 144kbps on National Access or 400-700kbps peaks at 2.0Mbps on BroadbandAccess(read EVDO)....

Boggles my mind.

I read that you are cheap and ignorant rather than a frugal and intelligent.

If you want to be cheap go somewhere else, VZW is not a cheap carrier. If you want coverage and reliability ( and the most EVDO coverage ) stay with VZW.

Macerick13, I don't know where you get off calling someone cheap "cheap and ignorant" because they don't want to spend $100 + on cell phone service (which certainly isn't "frugal") If you read the posts you would see that he is connecting through BT, with National Access, and that he really only uses it at night, so its almost free...that seems pretty frugal to me. If you were "intelligent" you would probably know what frugal meant.

On the contrary I spend money all the time. And maybe thats everyones problem. $10 here for this service, $10 there for that service, it all adds up. $120 a month for phone and data is rediculous. $45 amonth for data is rediculous. Anyway. The truth of the matter is I currently get on the internet on my Pocket PC at 120kbps speed of Verizon National Access. I have an 800 minute plan for $60 a month and probably only use about 400 minutes of it for voice. The other 400 I can use for data during peak hours. Thats right I get internet on my Pocket PC and Laptop for just use of the minutes I already paid for. So why pay more. And my connection to my Dell Axim Pocket PC or Laptop is via Bluetooth.
