Any Version 8 News?
LG-CJMay 16, 2006, 6:24 PM
Does anyone have any new news on v8 coming out? I've seen the rumors of VZ Navigator, which would be super-cool, as well as some other claimed things... but honestly bugfix-wise the phone has been awesome since v7. I had none of the little gremlins I had with v1 or v3 (which weren't major, but still). But turning my phone into a GPS mapper would be sweet for sure.
Are there any other new hints at what the change log will entail? Or when we might start seeing it trickle across the country?
I don't plan on migrating to an 8300. It's just not 'that' different and in some ways looks a little cheaper with the gray color scheme. This thing scratched so many itches with it's functionality that it'll be interesting to see what becomes ...

There probably won't be any more software upgrades for the 8100. They are currently trying to get rid of them ($49.99 now on website) to launch the 8300.

That's too bad. Such a wonderful phone. Only thing I never found was a bluetooth headset that wasn't too flakey with static and didn't have an echo for the person on the other end. Amazingly, nothing beats my $18 AT&T 'wired' headset yet... although I keep looking.
Like I mentioned, 8300 isn't much of a "killer app" to justify upgrading. It doesn't fix anything that's broken and doesn't add anything really new. I've actually been going back and forth since my original battery doesn't have the life it used to after a solid year of being on all the time and lots of web/vcast usage (that onboard modem sucks a lot of juice 🙂)... plus an addition to Zuma 🙂. Unless something better comes along, I think it might be time to try the fat ex...

The only thing the 8300 really adds is the flash UI and stereo Bluetooth. I think I'm going to wait for the Samsung a990 before I get a new phone.

Me too, although the successor to the 8300 may be my next jump since that'll likely introduce some more "big deal" options. Also, since the 8300 uses microSD (instead of miniSD on the 8100), I'd have to buy memory all over again. I'm quite content with my 1GB card right now and the few hundred mp3s, a couple dozen videos, and some extra room for ad hoc vids or pictures I might shoot 🙂

Listed as Coming Soon on Verizon Wireless Intranet. Call customer to confirm if you'd like. 😎 2Yr pricing of this handset is currently set at $99. Hope this helps.

Would they even need to have an updated version of the software to utilize VZ navigator? They 8100 is more than capable of handling that app now isn't it?

VZNavigator will be handled via GIN for any handset they can get it to work on. It's a revenue generator for VZW, so they'll be attempting to get it working on as many handsets as possible.

So are you saying it's already on GIN someplace? I haven't been actively looking but is there a place to check for it? I figured it would be under "Get Going"... seemed logical... perhaps not 🙂
I also hope they do a 1-3 month trial of it like they did with VCast (to get people hooked)... I'd like to try it before getting a permanent leech on my wallet 🙂
