I don't know. I've taken my card out when the phone is on, but never while playing MP3's. As far as returning at Best Buy, they will not refund or exchange an opened card.

I would think that any store that is presented with a defective card that they sold would AT LEAST exchange the card. If not that sure better be somewhere clearly visible to the consumer prior to the purchase.

They probably will if you don't tell them what you did, because it sounds like it was damaged due to your error.

I had one returned because I was told by VZW that it was causing the static ringer problem on my phone. Had no problem getting it exchanged. Mary you play your mp3s in shuffle mode? If so do you get the static when u get a call or an alarm goes off?

Okay, I was randomly, I thought, having the static problem. Then, I noticed it would ONLY do it @ times where my phone showed didn't have any service.

I called Verizon and spoke with a VERY nice man and he went to all lengths to help me. First, he hadn't heard of the problem. We both thought that it shouldn't do that since it seemed to be a feature of the phone (like the Calculator) which shouldn't be dependent upon a signal.

Then, he asked me to put the phone in "Standalone Mode" (Settings and Tools, System, and turn Standalone Mode on). Standalone Mode doesn't hurt the phone and it is not in the "Hidden Menu". It's just a normal feature of the phone that basically means the features of the phone are available, but no service - l...

I dont have that problem at all...when I am in an area that doesn't have service my mp3s work just fine. I just tried it in standalone mode and they work fine also.

The only time I get the static is while playing the mp3s on shuffle and getting a call or an alarm the ringtone turns to static.

monicajoys,

Wow! That’s very interesting! Would you mind telling me when you purchased your phone and which software version you have (I’m assuming it’s Version 4, but I just wanted to check)? Yeah, it was a little disappointing to me to find out that my MP3s wouldn’t work when my phone had no service ☹️

Thanks!

Ummm...I can't remember exactly when I purchased the phone...but I am thinking it was around the begining of August (it was definately before version 4 came out). I do have version 4 software now though. What kind of card do you have? Also what kind of reader do you have?

Here is the thread:

Fellow VX 9800 Users please help..When i am in no service areas (i.e. as underground on the subway) i get an awful static sound when i try to use my Mp3 player..To mimic this "no-service" scenario please place ur VX9800 in standalone mode --Go to "Settings & Tools" , then "System"(press 5), then "Standalone mode" (1), and click to "On" ...then try to play MP3s and please provide me feedback if you "Do" or "Do not" receive static playback...i know the 8100 had similar issues and the "standalone mode" helped alleviate the static problem, but i still am encountering the static noise even in this mode and ive tried to 4 different vx9800 and two different sd cards. Just try and give me some feedback , Greatly appreciat...
