A friendly warning about 2.5mm stereo adaptors

I just got two "stereo" adaptors off ebay that were list as stereo. The adaptor does have correct amount of contacts but it only plays the right sound channel.

I just figured a warning would be helpful to some others.

The 2nd link doesn't work but the first one has the wrong # of connectors. It needs to have only 2.

I recently ordered one with 2 and I'm waiting for it to arrive so I can test it. I'll post the results.

Are you really sure about that?

My stereo Jabra headset connectors have 3 rings (4 contacts) on it and it works fine.

My mono headset has 2 rings (3 contacts) and it works fine.

Isn't there a contact for a mic? I’m not sure cell phones conform 100% to typical audio connector naming conventions.

Either way I’d be interested in what your results are, thanks for the offer to post.

And here’s the other link again

This one also has three rings.

You may be right, on this phone the 3rd ring may be for the mic, which would explain why the jabra has 3 rings and works. Maybe it depends on what the rings are meant to control.

The one I bought for my motorola has three rings and a mic and doesn't work on this phone.

Can you post a pic of the plug on your jabra?

I compared my jabra connector to the adaptor connector and spacing on the contacts (rings) doesn’t line up, by few millimeters (I didn't measure it yet cause I can’t find a ruler).

I’m guessing that’s the problem. But the adaptor could still be wired incorrectly.

Yep it's definitely a wiring issue. Just got my cable today. It has the exact same contacts (2) as the $2.99 RS one, but it doesn't work well. If I plug it in all the way, you only hear sound in one ear.

I have to pull it out somewhat, but then the quality of the sound is not as good.

I give up. I'm gonna continue using the RS one. Although it is cheap and sticks WAY out from the phone - like 1 1/2 inches - and you have to pull out the plug slightly, it works well and the sound from my earbud headphones is outstanding. In fact, the sound on this MP3 player beats many others that I have tried in the past. Try listening to an MP3 in 320 kbps. The sound is truly exemplary.
Since I don't usually listen to music while making/receiving call...

I know that's what I should have done, however I'm just one of those people who can't solder to save my life. I'll ruin 3 of them before I get it right.
