a question about this phone and the internet

ok, I've been thinking about getting this phone, and i talked with my cousin-in-law (who works for cingular) and he's going to see if he can do an employee discount for me. In the meantime, i asked him about unlimited Internet.

Here's my not so well made plan:

1.get the phone and USB cable (i have no bluetooth for my computer)

2. get unlimited data plan for $25.99 (that media plan)

3. hook my phone up to my computer and use that to surf the web (using the phone as a modem)

I cannot get DSL or cable, only 56k and satellite are available (56k i have now, and satellite is wayyyy too expensive)

so, my question is, can i use the Internet on my home computer through the cellphone without any problems? i'm in the EDGE network, and...

From what I understand is that when you have the unlimited data plan that is only for the internet usage on your phone, not when its hooked to a computer. But I may be wrong so when you find out let us all know.

PS. Its probably cheaper to get a bluetooth adapter for your computer instead of buying the usb adapter.

In order for you to use your phone for what you mentioned, you will need the Laptop Connect (use to be called Data Connect) unlimited plan which runs in the neighborhood of $80 per month. The lower level unlimited data plans are only for use directly on the handset itself.

You can also connect the phone to your computer by USB cable or by bluetooth. The bluetooth adapters run $30-$40, while the usb cable + software will run close to $50.

hope this helps.

so if i bought one of those data plans (they start at $9.99, the $24.99 one is unlimited) you're saying that if i hook it up to the computer and use the phone as a modem, it would not work??

how does cingular know that i'm not using the internet on the phone?

The amount of data transferred by using the wireless internet through the handset is significantly less than that transferred using the phone as your modem.

Ive seen features used incorrectly before, so if your friend wants to add one of the less expensive data plans and you try it out to see if works, go right ahead. I am all for saving money! It is worth a shot. 😁

This is true, however, with the advent of MobiTV, which uses a TON of data, it makes it nearly impossible for someone to determine whether the Media package is being used for WAP svc on the phone or data connect to a laptop.

Because you're using a different feature on the phone to get to the internet. The phone knows which access method you are using, after all.

You'll be able to access the internet, but it will be at GPRS speeds and not EDGE speeds.

That is 100% false information.

Ever since I got my S710a I've been doing this with my MEdia Works package and it's been working fine. I'm also getting EDGE speeds, not GPRS.

My bad... just going by how it was explained to me by Cingular and also how several people have explained it here.

It seems Cingular likes to bullshit in order to sucker people into buying the data connect kit and data connect plan.

YES IT WILL WORK, I do it myself! People that say it wont are either employees of Cingular trying to make their company more money or simply people that dont know what they're talking about.

so, if i use this phone to connect my computer to the net, cingular won't mind?

here's the scoop:
I talked to my cousin about a week ago, and he tried to get me a discount, but the best he could offer is the phone for $400, and a $100.00 service credit. since wirefly is at $279, i'm going to wait about a month and see if i can get the phone at about the $200 mark, then add the $24.99 unlimited media plan and the early night calling option, so at 7:00pm i can use unlimited minutes!

what do you think HPD? will that work?

my cousin said that ciungular runs some kind of report to see if somebody's been using their phone on their computer, and if they catch somebody they could try and charge them or something!

i hope this works out ...

I've been doing it since I've had Cingular for about 6 months now, and they haven't minded. Those expensive data connect plans are for PDA devices and data cards.

And of course that'll work, I cant garauntee a price drop for the S710a though.

As for your cousins claim, I think he's full of it, no offense. There's plenty people aside from myself that do it and there's been no report of Cingular charging anyone. I think your cousin just wants to make more money.

no probblem, he's not a well liked cousin anyway 😉

have you been using it a lot, or just a little bit. i'm usually on the net for about 5-6 hours every night during the week, and about 20-25 hours on the weekend, i hope that's not too much?

The only time I really use it is on weekends at work. So, probably a total of 24 hours a month or so. But the data transfer in those hours is alot.

I've never been charged a single dime for using it nor have I never had Cingular say a thing about it.
