Just talked to my friend at the cingular store here, and they got dummies and collateral in today's shipment. Should be next week on release if everything goes as usual on collateral arrival vs phone arrival.

sounds like great news - any word on streaming video content to go along with the phone?

VZW is offeriong vdeo on demand content Feb 1 and I would think Cing would want to compete somehow

Streaming video?? I doubt it. I don't know what VZW is offering, but streaming video would require full 3G spec, 2 Mb/s. Last I heard (cnn.com article a few months ago) Europe is getting 400 Kb/s on an unstressed network, 100 Kb/s real world and we're about 13 millenia behind their mobile technology. I could be wrong, though. EDGE has 177 Kb/s max, but that's still nowhere near enough for streaming video.

why then would the headline phone description include streaming video?

from what I understand EDGE is used as a complement to 3G networks in lower density areas of Europe---obviously Cingular is moving towards offering WCDMA 3G by summer in major cities but I think EDGE supports streaming video reasonably well so long as the network is not fully loaded - which it never will be because true 3G will be deployed befor ethe EDGE networks get loaded

1. I don't know. Marketing?

2. The theoretical maximum of EDGE is 177 Kb/s, which probably would support streaming video, but that is at the maximum. I'm not saying it's impossible, but I'd say streaming video is at least a few years away from US reality.

I'll believe it when I see it. My wife has Verizon, so we'll see.

Streaming video is already available through MobiTV. I know you can get it on Cingular, I am not sure whether other carriers will support it or not. www.mobitv.com

A cingular rep showed me a sheet from MobiTV and said that the 6620 supported it, but didn't know about any other phone. I hope that cingular can launch this phone soon and that they aren't waiting becuase the V3's aren't selling as well as they had hoped. S710a! -Alex

otamywy,

www.mobitv.com

this is a service that is currently offered on the AWs and Cingular Nokia 6620. I dont think any other phones are supported (for AWS/Cingular) put it does work with some equipment with other providers as well. Once you see it in action on a 6620, you would understand that they use the term "stream" pretty loosley aa the quality is barely subpar, res is horrible, and choppy audio as well. At least thats been my experience

Ok, so it is out there. Interesting, I did not know that. But like others have said, it's not very good (and limited number of phones that support it), so I'll modify my original claim: good streaming video is still a little ways off. But maybe not as far as I thought. I guess when you think about it, EDGE is more than 2x as good as 56K at 177K, at the max of course.

Thanks for the info.
