USB cable or Bluetooth?

Hey all,

I'm a noob to Motorola cell phones, so please bear with this question.

I'd like to able to transfer photos, ringtones, games and contacts between my phone and my PC. This should be easy with my wife's v220 as it has a USB port and is an established model. However, the V551 is new, and I'm going to have to buy equipment either way to get access to it.

So which is better/easier to use? The Bluetooth or the USB cable? I have an iPaq that has bluetooth ... would I be able to use that to transfer the stuff? That would probably be the most cost effective, but would I need the PhoneTools software or could I just do the transfers with a direct connection? Also, if I have to buy something to have it talk to my PC, which works ...

Just traded in my RAZR V3 for this phone today. The RAZR was a great fashion accessory, but too expensive to use as just a phone.

I was able to use Motorola Phone Tools (MPT) V3 to transfer images and ringtones with no problem using my Dell laptop's built-in bluetooth card. The throughput was quite good even across the room.

Unlike the V220 and the RAZR, the V551 does NOT have a mini-USB port. This is no big deal unless you wanted to charge your phone from your laptop.

MPT bundles with a either a bluetooth USB adapter or USB cable are available on eBay or other online retailers.

Cool.

I was looking on eBay and was just wondering which one was better.

I'll also give it a whirl with my iPaq to see if it'll transfer.

Thanks,

Super,

Once the initial connection is made on either bluetooth or USB, the software works the same. MPT3 lets you create profiles for multiple phones. My wife and son have V220's that use the USB cable to sync from the same MPT3 installation.

I don't think you'll need a tutorial, they seemed to have designed it with non-technical folks in mind. Perhaps the one exception is that the editor which allows you to select a portion of an MP3 could be a bit easier to use.

However, once you click and drag to select a portion of a song you just save that selection to its own file and send it to your phone using the "transfer" button.

Thanks. I'll play with my wife's 220 tonight and see what happens. I have a cord that will work in that one.

You might get slapped if you try that! 😢

lol she was fine with it.

It was pretty easy to use. Also, for those that want to know, I paired my v551 with my iPaq 2210 thru Bluetooth just fine. Makes an easy way to transfer pics, ringtones and videos.

Doesn't allow me to upload games though, so I guess I'd need another solution for that.
