Phone book?

This is my first Moto (won it in the learn and earn contest) I was aware of the dreded phonebook set up. I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to tweak the settings in order to display just a contact's name once in the phonebook list, and then access all of that contact's numbers in a sub-menu. (like what samsung and sanyo do with their phone books)

any input would be appreciated!

I wish!! I got me a V551 off of eBay. It should be here Tuesday, I hope. I was hoping that maybe Motorola® (bless their heart) would have gotten that squared away on this model, but I guess not. 🙄

Digitmasher, try this:

go into your phonebook and scroll all the way down to New Entry.

2. Hit the menu button (the 4 line button)

3. Scroll to Setup and hit Select

4. Scroll down to View and hit Change

5. Change from All Contacts to Primary Contacts, and hit change.

Hopes this helps.

😲 Terry C., you are the man! This fixes the horribleness of Moto's phone book. When I first read your post I thought to myself "surely there is not such an easy fix for this that we have not learned about yet."

But I tried it, and it works like a charm. You can just right arrow or left arrow and toggle between the numbers stored under one name.

Again, outstanding! I am anxious now for my V551 to arrive.

No Problem. 🙂 Let me know if you need anything else.

Terry, I have a question.

I'm new to Motorola phones. I had a crappy Nextel several years back at work, but I just bought the 551 for personal use.

Now I like the idea of having the numbers on the SIM card for protection, but you can't use the extended features unless you have them stored in the phone. So I did what Cingular said to try, and that was to do a merge.

Now I see 2 versions of the number: the one from the phone and the one from the SIM. If there a way to keep the numbers stored on a SIM as a backup, but not viewable in the phonebook?

Thanks for anwersing a noob question.

Super

I tried viewing "Primary Contacts" instead of "All Contacts", but to no avail. Still have the same problem in that it shows duplicate names (one for the phone, one for the SIM).
You can get to Primary Contacts by:
Pressing the "Menu Key" (See Page 1 of manual) when in the Address Book, then scroll down and select "setup", then select "View:" and change from All Contacts" to "Primary Contacts". (You have to have "Sort by:" as "Name".) Seems like this should do something. I don't notice any difference. What is this for?

Nevermind! I see from the prior post that the "Primary Contact" will allow you to store alternate #'s on the same name.

Here's a brain fart! Instead of changing the category of each entry and changing the catagory each time you use your address book, just go to each SIM (duplicate) entry and insert a "_" before the name. Now all SIM entries appear at the end of the list. Just can't scroll them, but you don't need to if they're copies of the phone entries.

I have tried this many times but everytime I add an additional phone number to a person in my book it just makes a new entry and shows the person twice!! ☹️

For this to work, you must insure that the View By: (within setup menu) is set to "picture" and not "list" or it will not show View: for changing to "Primary contact" option.

My mistake: I meant - "Sort by:" has to be set to "Name" for the "View:" option to become available.

Would Terri C. or someone else repeat the fix for the phone book. I can't seem to locate it. Thanks.
