Press release from Nortel Networks:
http://www.nortelnetworks.com/corporate/news/newsrel ... »

Monday, Verizon launches BroadbandAccess network in 14 major metropolitan areas and 24 airports. BroadbandAccess powered in part by CDMA2000 1xEV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized) 3G wireless equipment from Nortel Networks.

Does this get us closer to seeing the VX-8000? I hope so.

From the words of the NYC VZW manager:

"The VX8000 will probably be launched on the same time frame as when the EV-DO goes nationwide, thus making it the first EV-DO capable phone. Then they will hype the A770, and release it in a couple of weeks or so after the VX8000 craze dies down."

He's a long time friend of mine, and has not steered me wrong.

Your friend is probably right. that is about the same info I have been getting. Hopefully the 8000 will be out in a the next few weeks! They will probably hold of a little to make sure everything is running ok, so I am betting the 8000 will not be out the exact same time, but hopefully soon!

I thought he said the 8000 will be launched when EVDO goes nationwide. The release in 14 major cities is not nationwide.

Yes, I was about to make that correction too. I am projecting the Nationwide release sometime around Christmas, and VZW hyping that with the VX8000. I would say that the VX8000 will be available about December 20th. THAT IS MY PROJECTED DATE, BASED UPON MY SOURCES, NOT A REAL DATE!! But I see it as a very large holiday phone, and the release of this phone will drop all of the prices on the current phones, making VZW very attractive for the holidays.

Feel free to agree or disagree

If you think that it will release on December 20th then is IS NOT intended for the Chistmas market, that is way too late... If you want a product to be part of the Christmas shopping bubble you intoduce it by the week of Thanksgiving...

I spoke to VZW and they told me that it would be out by early October. I called them on several occations to make sure that one rep was not pulling my chain, but they all confirmed it with the sales and marketing departments. However, don't take my word for it, call them up and ask them yourself. (Be sure to let the rep know that the sales and marketing departments would have the informatin if she/he does not and then ask to be connected to someone in one of those departments.)

Exactly, Verizon would never release a phone that late if they intended it to appeal to Christmas shoppers.

My sources tell me it's actually 11 markets and 8 airports.

The markets, as I've been told are:
West Palm Beach, FL
Tampa, FL
Philadelphia, PA
New York, NY/Newark, NJ
Milwaukee, WI
Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, FL
Los Angeles, CA
Kansas City, MO
Baltimore, MD
Austin, TX
Atlanta, GA.

The airports, as I've been told are:
Sky Harbor Internation Airport (Phoenix)
Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport (Dallas/Ft. Worth)
Love Field Airport (Dallas)
George Bush Intercontinental Airport (Houston)
William P. Hobby Airport (Houston)
Orlando International Airport (Orlando)
Louis Armstrong International Airport (New Orleans)
Jacksonville International Airport

Hope this does speed up the release of the VX8000!

You listed 13 cities, which is what the articles says. New York, NY is one city and Newark, NJ is another. Miami and Ft Lauderdale two separate cities.

You listed 8 airports, plus the airports I am sure in the major cities which is 22 airports all together I think. I know New York has 2 airports, does any other city listed?

I said 11 MARKETS, not cities. Markets are different. One market can consist of several cities. But I guess the original message did say metropoliton areas ...

But the technicalities of how many it is, I suppose is irrelevant. The point is that it is coming. I just recieved information today that EV-DO should be launched on a national level sometime in the 4th Quarter.
