Couldnt think of a better subject. If this is the model I had looked at last year, it had a short life with Verizon, am I right? I really liked it, buttons very easy to use, Being blind, must go by touch. So many of today's phones have flat buttons that require great care to use. I cannot afford one but is this model still available? If not, what current models are just as good as far as the user interface goes?

No, the 9900 is not available anymore through Verizon. But it WAS, and IS one of the best phones it produced and still does a lot of things better than the newer phones.

The camera and screen still tops any other phone. But if you want to try another phone, take a look at the Motorola 815. Similar features but allows you to use the voice dialing WITHOUT having to program each name, it just understand the name or number you say.

The camera is not as good, the phone book search is not as good, but the quality of the phone is very good and reception is excellent.

Jim, seems there will never be a phone, or any product for that matter, that does everything right, but some come close. Is the e815 very capable of user interaction by touch or by speech output alone? In other words, a blind person would have to rely on touch or voice to operate it. The Audiovox 9900 has those nice raised buttons, Dont know about the rest as I never did take one home. Thanks for the input.

The e815 has very nice raised keys. In fact, I think they are easier to use and respond better than the 9900. The center key (5) has a raised dot for reference

The voice dialing on the e815 works well and actually you can request other commands but I don't think they would be of advantage to a blind person. However, a blind person would easily be able to either say the name or number they want to call and the phone will do the rest.

You do not need to train the phone to do voice dialing, it finds the name you request that is in the phone book. You can do this with or without the speakerphone, which is also very clear. You can also have the phone dial any numbers directly by voice for any number that is not in the phone book.

I might have a 9900 phone available if you are interested. It has some use on it but it is in very good condition, very good. It was my wifes phone until she switched to the treo and I already have a 9900 which I love. If you are interested email me at tomad9@yahoo.com.
