Curve for Verizon

LOUISPETER

Im thinking about upgrading to the curve.. however verizon wont let you upgrade to the curve unless you take their additional 30 dollar a month data/message plan (which i dont need). Is there a way around this? For example.. activating it with the data plan they force you to take, then switching your service back to an old phone, switching your plan back to a basic plan, then callling them to reactivate the blackberry again so you can use the blackberry, but without the additional 30 dollar a month data/message plan? There has to be a way around it.... Thanks

There doesn't have to be a way around because there isn't one...It's an agreement Verizon has with RIM based on the email service blackberries provide. You really don't need a blackberry if you don't want to use the services it provides.

i know plenty of people who have blackberrys who dont utilize the extra data/message plan.

and as far as not needing a blackberry to directly coincide with the services they provide..... thats crap, because i can utilize it very well as an organizer and date planner.
so someone who has a more "well rounded" answer. please feel free to help. Thanks

You might have friends with blackberries that don't use data but I will bet a million dollars they aren't on Verizon and if they tell you anything different they are lying. If you want a device to use as an organizer then get a Palm or any of the Windows Mobile devices as they do not require data service. If you go with a blackberry you are going to pay at least $25 per month extra, sorry to be blunt but your same complaint has been brought up for years and nothing has changed.

ok
if you have a blackberry curve with the message plan,
then tell verizon youre switching your phone back to a non blackberry and to cancel the data plan, and then say a month later tell them you want to reactivate service on a different phone (your blackberry again)... are they going to know that the phone youre reactivating on is your blackberry?

I don't know if there is any truth to this or not but the VZW rep told me without the data plan you wont get the service books that are required for the phone to work. The phone has to be registered on the BB network to receive these books

Yes they will know. Your best bet is got to another carrier ATT will let you do it. I have relatives that have 2 kids that have a bb on no data plan. (ATT)

Mighty is right and his answer was blount, but dead on. If you just want a calendar, get a WM device or treo. But all Blackberries require a data plan--there is no scenario where you can get around it....its just a rule.

actually
of course there is a way around it.
switch to Sprint 😁

at least they give you everything you would ever need for a decent price

and sprint happens to work all over the place for me.

Hows that for getting around it?

Peace

have fun with your sub par cell coverage, terrible customer service, NO MMS on smartphones, and a company that is sinking faster than the titanic.

Yep, you're really "getting around it"

Thank you cwcanty and mighty14 for posting very helpful and rather nice comments to try to help this LOUISPETER out. LOUISPETER needs to learn to play nice and gain a better understanding of how Blackberry devices function.

Oh cwcanty why can you not play nice? Cwcanty is a very knowledgable person and very helpful, but i have learned to not suggest Sprint for anything around him because it triggers a change in him similar to David Banner changing to the Hulk.

For your scenario Sprint would be a solution for you, I have excellent coverage, the data speeds are great, and they don't require the Blackberry data plans if you don't want them. They are much more flexible when it comes to Blackberry's and cheaper for that matter. For instance of you for some reason choose the 8830, they are the only carrier that provide it with an unlocked SIM. Hopefully that helps.

See ya C-Dub

oh Bigkippa, how I love thee.

Yes, I'm not a fan of sprint at all, and the only reason I got a little fiesty was because he bragging about the sprint coverage. Im passionate about verizon cause I respect the way they do business and I appreciate the way they are moving forward.

And since when can you activate a BB without any type of data plan. I've honestly never heard of that on any carrier. BB is pretty strict about that. If you have any documented material or webpages that say its not required I would love to see them.

No documentation, but I have used a blackberry without a data plan, and my brother has the 8703 on Sprint and doesn't have internet. Unfortunately you can't use the BBM or anything without it either. But yes you can activate a Blackberry without BIS.

In response to getting a bb minus a data plan....an Att rep said you could do it,( whether they r wrong I don't know). However on verizon, you definitly have to have a plan hands down.
