LG Dare VX-9700

Not sure if it's a defect with my phone, or just a software issue, however I've noticed that when the phone is dormant, or locked when txt messsages come through I don't always receive my alert sound. I've fiddled around with various settings, and nothing has seemed to make a difference.

so anyone else experiencing this problem? or could I just have a small defect?
