POP3 vs. SMTP

I am confused...my company does not have a balckberry server but i would still like to receive emails on my blackberry and believe we have smtp sytem in place, can i set up bb on my work email without haveing a bb server?

any help is much appreciated

Yes you can. Also POP3 & STMP work together it isn't one or the other.

POP is Post Office Protocol.
SMTP is Standard (Simple) Mail Transport Protocol.

Generally POP retrieves your email while SMTP allows you to send email.

this means i can sign up for the 29.99 unlimited plan?

if i use pop3/smtp, ami still receiving emails instantaneously?what are the benefits of bbserver? wireless sync?

you will receive the emails about every 15 minutes. you set up a Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) account which checks your mail server for messages every 10 to 15 minutes. You are right, the 29.99 is the way to go.
The Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) is usually attached to a corporate mail server--Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Domino etc. It delivers email instantenously and syncronizes mail, contact, calendar, tasks wirelessly. It also costs a few thousand dollars. Wireless Sync is not an option on blackberries.
