The Pearl is a great phone. Once you get used to the suretype, you'll love it. I came from a phone with a full querty keyboard and it only took about two hours with the suretype to type as fast as I did on the querty.

The suggestion is solid and suretype is incredible. The form factor (SIZE) is unreal and now my wife enjoys my 8830 and I love the pearl.

As already mentioned SureType is extremely easy to adjust to. I did so in about a day. The trick for me was to ignore the suggestions as you type ... more often than not the word you want will appear as you type it. The few times I had to rely on the suggestions they were right on the mark.

I actually prefer the Pearl's wide key keyboard and SureType to my previous qwerty smartphones.

oops to address your actual question I believe if you can turn off SureType you're left with T9 which really defeats the purpose of the keyboard. At that point you can get any phone with calendar and web access to meet your needs.

Like stated above just type away then hit spell check and you should be good.

Shutting off Sure Type leaves you with multi tap not T9.

I have tried that Sure-Type, but I am in the minority (I guess) because I like the Multi-Tap, especially on the Pearl with only two characters on each key. Thank heavens the 8130 lets you use either.

I agree with everyone else that sure type has got to be the fastest and easiest thing ever, much more comprehensive than T9 but since no one answered your question just press the menu button while you're in email or SMS/MMS and scroll down, you will see "enable multi-tap" - that lets you tap for each letter. If you only have a short menu with only 4 or 5 options on it then scroll down to "full menu" it should come up. Also, under "options" I think you can go to "phone" and there may be a setting there but I can't remember exactly.
