transferring phone #

I'm on sprint right now (yeah, i know) and waiting to switch to cingular when the phone comes out. My sprint # is a DC number while I now live in Atlanta. I REALLY want to keep my DC number! Now, i've got a friend willing to allow me to make my mailing address his house (to send my Sprint bill). If I use his address as my own, do you think I can get away with doing the number transfer to Cingular over the phone/net?

Any alternative ideas to doing that?

What you can do is call up Cingular and tell them you would like to bring your number over from Sprint. they will run eligibility and see if your number is able to port. if it is they will continue to set you up with a Cingular account. You dont have to have a DC address for a DC #. What you will need is a Atlanta address on file so they can tax you from Atlanta. yah I work for Cingular Customer Care and have to do this all the time.

Interesting since if I go to the bottom of this link it says my number is eligible only if I enter the DC number and my friends zip code - sayst it's not eligible if I put in my Atlanta Zip code.

It says that because if you have an exsisting Cingular account you would already have to have a DC area cose on your account. But sisnce you do not have an account yet then you can simply open an account with that DC number.

If I had a cingular account I wouldn't be using their number portability...

I'm confused. I've been told in the past I couldn't do it...hence the term "LOCAL number portability"

Sorry to Confuse you... let me see if I can explain this better. You will be setting up a new accout with Cingular. when you cal in to do this there going to ask for the number that your porting over. you will then give them your DC number and they will check the eligibiltiy. once it passes eligibility you cna give them your Atlanta address even tho you dont have a atlanta phone number. pretty much that simple. they will finish setting up your account and you should be good to go. Remember not to cancel your Sprint account until your number has been ported over.
