SIM card question - ordering phone from ebay

I love the Motorola A630 phone and as it isn't available to buy directly from TMobile anymore, I am wanting to buy one through ebay.
The phone I am interested in bidding on says it is unlocked, but doesn't mention anything about the SIM card (whether it does or does not include one). The seller says this phone is brand-new, still in original packaging.
IF this phone does not come with a SIM card how do I go about getting a SIM card for the phone and/or programming it? Can I do this through my local TMobile store?
If the phone is unlocked does that mean I don't need a SIM card for it?
Thanks in advance for the help!

a lot of carriers are real pricks about buying the phone from them and having their name on it, you may want to check with T-mobile and with the seller. I don't know about the SIM card though.

The seller on ebay replied to my post and he said the phone doesn't come with a SIM card.
He said that I should take the phone to tmobile and sign a contract with them and they *should* give me the SIM card for free??
Is that true?

IF the phone is unlocked, that means you can use a SIM from any cel carrier that operates on GSM.
If you sign a contract w. T-M (or any carrier) you get a SIM. W.O. a SIM all you can do is call 911. You could also get a pre-paid SIM from T-M if you don't want to sign a contract. Prepaid is much more expensive, tho, if you do more than a minimal amount of calling.

I wouldn't say you are getting the SIM for "free". You may or may not have to pay an activation charge. Probably not IF you go to a company store rather than an independent dealer.

Okay, the phone is unlocked. So when I get it, I just take it in to my T-Mobile store and activiate it? I will be signing a contract because I do use my phone quite often. I really appreciate your help!

no no no no no....

The only reason to sign a contract is because they give you a nice discount on the phone. Since you already have the phone you want you can call Tmobile and tell them you have your own unlocked phone, and you want to start service and you can just go month to month. They will assign you a number, and then you go into the tmobile store and tell them you are a customer and you need a SIM card, I think the one I got was $25 and Tmobile will give you a credit for it.

It worked for me.

So I need to call T-Mobile for a number and then go to the store to get a SIM card.
Will I be able to get a contract plan (i.e. smartaccess) or will I have to do pay-as I go type thing?

1) Call T-Mobile and tell them that you already have an unlocked international phone and you want to become a customer.

2) Pick whatever rate plan that you want

3) Whatever plan you pick comes with a SIM card, and I think the best way to get it is to go into a Tmobile store, and afterward call Tmobile and they will issue you a credit for what the store charged for the SIM.

If you are going to do so do not call 1-800-tmobile. We CAN NOT sell just sim cards. Best bet is just setting it up at retail dealer.

Nope.... You gotta call T-mobile and set up the service because then you get the $25 credit for the SIM.

Make sure not to sign a contract!
