EDGE officially launches tomorrow, (September 1st!) on 70% of their network 😁 By the end of September their whole network should be fully up and running.

Pricing: Same as GPRS, but in the future its subject to change!

😁 😁

Very cool. Now if they only had a BT/QERTY phone like the A630 that supported EDGE I would be VERY happy.

I would love to try that out. I already have an EDGE phone (Nokia 6620) on T-Mobile.

This is great news. I am planning on dropping DSL and using Tmo for my internet service. Do you know if the Sony Ericsson GC79 aircard on the Tmo web page is EDGE capable?
Thanks.

Yeah. Atleast its coming. Now, I bet you will start to see thread that say "oh EDGE is slow, I want 3G(UMTS and HSPDA), when is T-Mobile going to launch it, and why are they so far behind?" 🙄

Be thankful that they have finally hopped on the EDGE bandwagon.

At least T-Mobile isn't charging $60-$80/mo for the service.

Which T-Mobile phones support edge. Will you be able to tell by an icon on the phone if you have edge service or regular GPRS?

Moe777,
Use the phone finder feature on this website. EDGE is an option to select. 😁

What I would like to know is how much the new hardware is going to cost for existing customers. I haven't been particularly happy wtih my GPRS internet (it really is too slow for what I want and too finiky.) I would deffinatly want to test out the EDGE before commiting to yet another year contract with service I'm not sure I'm going to like any more than what I'm already dealing with.

EDGE is not a plan, its a feature. You don't have to extend your contract to add a feature onto your account. If you are paying the $19.99 add-on price for the T-Mobile unlimited Internet then you are fine for now, since T-Mobile said that they might change the price for the EDGE connection in the future, but as of now its the same as the GPRS price. All you need is an EDGE device. If you have a laptop you can get an EDGE PC card. If, not use a phone to connect to your computer with a data cable if the phone doesn't have bluetooth, or an IrDA port.

Personally, I'd like to see more coverage than 3g deployment.

interesting. so you think that coverage and low cost plans will entice customers away from 3g?

Depends on the customer. Most I meet like the plans T-mobile offers, but many are scared off when they see the coverage. As far as business lines I'm sure 3g will help T-mobile in that department.

The EDGE Card that TMO is releasing to replace the GC79 is the GC89. It'll be both WiFi and EDGE capable with the same design as the GC79. I also hear there is a place to plug some type of external antenna to it.

Ahh I see.

Well, they would need to win 3g spectrum first lol in order to deploy 3g data network. (but that is besides the point)

Ok, if you were running tmobile usa right now, what would you focus on more and why?
