Clarification on how 3g works

NokiaTMo

Apr 15, 2009, 5:03 PM
I've seen a couple forum posts saying things to the effect that a phone needs both 3g bands to function --- is this true? The reason I ask is that I am waiting for the Nokia N97, but it only runs 900/1900/2100, so no dice if both bands are required. Or is it just that Tmo runs 1700 in some areas and 2100 and others? If the latter is the case, I spend my time between DC, Columbus, and Cincinnati (the latter two do not have 3g yet AFAIK).

Yes, you need to have both bands (1700 and 2100). One is for upstream, one for downstream, but neither will work without the other. So the N97's 3G services will not work on T-Mobile's network. The EDGE services will still work fine.
