Renew contract advice, please

My T-mo contract was up in December...the old get more $39.95 plus the 19.95 internet add-on.

I'm very happy with their service (I just completed 2 years with T-mo) and am ready to re-up for another year. My questions are this:

Can I get the new 1000 anytime mins promo 39.95 as a renewal? Plus of course keep the internet add-on?

I don't really need a new phone...just bought privately a V620 and very happy with it, but I understand a renewal entitles you to a new phone at the same prices as offered for new contracts....is that true? If so, I might just get say, a V180, to have as a backup. Or should I wait until some other new phones are offered for free or for small fees?

Do you call customer care or tech support to get a phon...

😁 Yes, you can get the plan as a renewal, but that 39.99 1000 promo doesn't have Unlimited Nights on it. If you want the Unlimited Nights on it, you have to choose the $45.99 1000 minutes with Unlimited Nights and Weekends which is only 6.00 more, which is not bad. Since you said that you have been with T-Mobile for 2 Years, you can get your phone unlocked by calling Customer Care. And you can get a new phone at a "New Customer Price" They will check your account to see how much discount you can get. Plus you can keep the $19.99 T-Mobile Unlimited Add-on plan on your account. When you call them just tell them to keep it on your account.

Just one piece of advice/clarification: Just for renewing your contract doesn't automatically entitle you to the "same as new pricing" on a phone. If that were the case we'd have people calling in every month renewing their contract and getting free phones. To get the "same as new" pricing on a new phone, yes we do ask for a 12 month contract, but you must also meet the criteria of having 11 months since your last discounted handset, and 11 months on a qualifying pricing plan ($39.99 or higher for sigle line, or $69.99 on a Family share plan).

If you have a phone that's working for you fine right now, my advise would be to keep it. If you're elibible to upgrade and get the full discount, renewing your contract to get a different pricing ...

😁 Forward that info to the one I replied to. I am going to sign up for the $45.99 plan that just came out. You think I should wait for the EDGE phones right to get a high end phone? I am not going to pay like 300 for a EDGE phone, thats out!

Thanks for all the good info!

So if I understand correctly, I can go ahead and renew my contract (let's say on the 39.95 promo plus the internet add-on) but still call and get a discounted phone in a few months? I had thought that the new phone offer was only valid at the time you renew your contract. It has been more than a year since my last discounted phone, and I have had more than 2 years at 39.95 or better. I may hold off on a renew as there is a possibility that my employer will offer a T-mo discount soon. We get 50% off hotspots but not regular cell plans yet. Verizon, Cingular, and Sprint all give us 15-25% off, but none of those companies offer the service requirements that I need.

Cheers,
Don in Chicago

I think I get it now. Does the discount on a new phone get better the longer I wait? Let's say I wait for a new phone until Jan 2006 (with my last discounted phone in Dec. 2003) will the discount be greater?

Nope, the discount gets as high as it is and stays there--however, the rebates and cost of phones can change at any time, so by waiting around I got my E105 for free, but if I'd upgraded right at 11 months it would have cost me about 150.00. It's a matter of timing. In general, if you keep an eye on new activation pricing on t-mobile.com you can get a pretty good idea of your price on a given phone. One caveat, though, is that if the price says "web only rebate," it's only for online activation, and the extra discount is available due to the low overhead of online activations. So when you see a phone you like for a price you like, call customer care to verify you can get that price and we'll send it out to you.

You won't get "better than new" pricing which would be the only thing better than new pricing. The phone upgrade program has changed from the way it was. It used to be that after a year you could get a discount of anywhere from $100 - $150 or so towards a new handset. That was scrapped in favour of "new pricing" if you have had a qualifying plan after 11 months.

Yeah, the old way our upgrade program was run was off of tenure. The longer you waited, the bigger your discount was, but it was capped at I believe $180. Meaning $180 off the full retail price of the phone. By incorporating mail in rebates into our upgrade program now, and restructuring it for "same as new" we are able to offer a lower end-cost to the consumer.

Just FYI...Now, you CAN get a discount if you don't want to wait the full 11 months. It's not as big, and it resets the timer, too. What the discount is goes off of time since last discounted, and off of credit class vs. tenure (don't ask me for the full mathematical equasion-I don't know lol). After 90 days though I believe everyone matches up to the same thing and it doesnt cha...

Good question. Each line carries it's own contract.

There are 2 scenarios when we ask for a contract extention. a) discounted phone or b) switching to a promotional pricing plan.

Yes, it is possible for 2 lines on the same Family plan to carry 2 different commitment dates. Example: If you activated teh Family plan at the same time, the initial contract will effect both phones starting from the same date. Now, if say you upgrade only one, and renew the contract on that line, then it would be renewed and not the other.

For the "same as new pricing" BOTH (or however many) phones included m...
