VoIP vs. UMA

What are the differences between these two types of wifi based calling technologies?

Traditional VoIP providers use the internet to get to the other provider's switch to connect the call. T-Mobile's UMA calling uses the internet to get to T-Mobile's switch, the call then travels over traditional methods to get to the other providers switch.

I assume you can use the same phone number through VoIP, correct?


And just for the record, the only reason I ask that is because I know someone who uses Skype on his Sidekick and if I remember correctly, I thought he said he was given a different number than he normally used. I could be wrong about that, though.
