porting from Cingular

Hopefully some of you T-Mo experts might be able to help.

My husband's Cingular plan expires next week. I want to port it to a T-mo prepaid account. I'm planning to buy a sim card myself; I already have an unlocked GSM phone. I'd also like the account to be in my name (if prepaid accounts are registered by names at all).

Is all this possible and would I need to go to a store or can I call T-mo customer service?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Prepaid is under name and birthdate, also you can do all of this in the store. What you would need is your husbands Cingular account number and password (usually last 4 of social), and for him to call in to Cingular and inform them that the number will be porting out to a different name. Numbers porting under a different name can have some issues, but Ive noticed if its notated in the porting out providers account, it goes through ok.

Thanks for your quick reply, V-town.

I'm porting the number because it's a very pretty one and I'd like to minimize the risk of any hiccups.

Would it be safer to port the number out to T-mo as you described on my husband's name first? And change the account info to my own name and b'date once the port is successful?

Is there a huge reason it needs to be in your name and not his? If it's just your preference then, no problem. Changing the info for an already activated prepaid account can sometimes be a pain. I usually recommend activating it in the account holder's name just to prevent any delays or hang ups in the port.

I have also found that the fastest way to port a number to a prepaid phone is to have it activated with a T-Mobile # first and then calling customer care for a number swap which is easier for a rep to do in store rather than trying to call yourself. Not every rep does this, I've just found it make both our lives easier.

Definately have your husband call and tell them that the number is being ported into your name. It may not speed...

Thanks so much for the detailed info. We'll do the port on my husband's name in a store somewhere.
