your not limited to a choice, when you upgrade it basicly means you get a discount on the phone you want if you re-new your service.

P.S.
Never recommend the sidekick unless your entire life revolves on texting

When you upgrade your just singing a new contract and you get the discount on any phone you want. Usually you can upgrade every two years or so. The sidekick has a crappy camera, no picture messaging, and is basically revolves around texting, gaming, and internet. So if you text and do internet then the phone is cool, but i traded mine in for a mda which does everything and it was the same price.

I'd be happy to explain it to you. There is no limit to what phone you can choose from (unlike other carriers). But the pricing changes depending on what model of phone you choose. You can go from a RAZR to a SK or a RAZR to a Nokia or a RAZR to a Samsung...etc.
The discounts are based on a few factors.
1. How long was your last contract?
2. Was your last upgrade a partial discount or a maximum discount?
3. Do you pay your bills on time?
4. In some cases what plan you have.
To address each of these in order:
1. If your last (or first) contract was a 1yr contract you only have to wait 11 mo from your activation (or last upgrade) to get the max discount on a 2 yr contract or a 1 yr contract. If your last contract was a 2yr contract ...
