Sharing towers with AT&T?

I live in New Orleans and have always had a problem receiving a signal at my house. Recently, my phone has been switching over to AT&T wireless and my signal is MUCH better at home. I called and was told that there is a sharing towers deal between the 2 companies (but I never noticed it before.) I thought it might have been a temporary thing due to the Hurricane that came down but Cust. Serv. told me it has always been that way. What I really want to know is this: 1.Is it permanent? 2. Will I be charged roaming fees? (I haven't as of yet unless I call to check my voicemail under AT&T).

my recommendation would be to call tmobile, most likely it is not permanent, and due to the fact that it is from the hurricane you would not be charged roaming charges BUT once again you should really call tmobile and double check with them

TMo does not charge roaming. If you have a regional rate plan, you may pay long distance, but never roaming. Depending on the area, we have sharing agreements with Cingular and AT&T. There is never a charge associated with using the other networks.

So if I were to manually change my phone to pick up the best signal. Then even after this Ivan debacle settles down and they go back to their normal service I can continue to get a signal from AT&T at my house? Without being charged for it? If so...I love T-mobile even more than ever. If not.....well, i'll still stay with them. You can't beat their plans, pricing and customer service. 3000 minutes for $49.95 can't be touched by any other carrier (that I have asked).

There is not an official, permanent agreement with ATT in NO, so most likely it will go away at some point. It really depends on if towers have to rebuilt or just brought back on line. Either way, if your phone picks up ATT and can make a call, that means we have a sharing arrangement (either temp or perm) and you will not be billed.

The tower sharing on AT&T is mutual, will end when disaster recovery efforts are completed, and affects the New Orleans and Mobile areas. Unless another storm slams through, I wouldn't count on it being available for long.

I'm over in Baton Rouge and mine's been doing that a bit lately, too. It's sortof amusing to see "AT&T Wireless" on my screen rather than T-Mobile, but I'd much rather use my phone on my proper network.

The funny thing is that the tower-share was largely unnecessary in Louisiana. We were barely touched by Ivan. Here in Baton Rouge, it didn't even rain.

I was sorely disappointed. I was hoping my call center would be closed for a day or two. 😛
